Are blood tests for a lump a bad sign

Went to my GP for a lump (not in my breast) - it's about the size of my palm, I've had it for about a month, it's painful and growing fast. He seemed quite sure it's harmless, but sent me for blood tests and an ultrasound. I've had breast lumps in the past and have had ultrasounds and biopsies but never a blood test - what is he expecting it to show? I was just a bit thrown that the process seemed different to a breast lump. He also ordered an X-ray, then cancelled it saying to do the ultrasound first.

He’s probably checking for infection.

Nearly everyone leaves my GP clutching a blood test form. It checks all sorts of things, mine always include vitamin and iron checks, thyroid checks etc, etc. They're a useful tool to rules things out.
