Raised platelets & positive FIT test

DumbledoresWand · 09/06/2023 18:14

In May a routine blood test for my diabetes showed that I had raised platelets, which has continued to rise in a 2nd blood test last week. I was referred for a chest xray (clear) and an ultrasound (yet to take place), and did a FIT test too
Today I got a text from the GP to say a call has been booked with them to discuss my results.
The FIT test is positive, at 112.
The GP call is booked for 23 June - I'm currently on holiday, out of the UK, and the 23rd is the day after we get home.
I've tried not to Google, but am aware that raised platelets can indicate cancer, so with the positive FIT test, my brain has gone into overdrive.
My partner was widowed 10yrs ago after his wife died from a terminal illness, so am trying not to let my thoughts snowball too much - but it's hard!

I don’t know anything about the FIT test I’m afraid but sending best wishes. Try not to google too much. 💐

I have slightly raised platelets, back in a few weeks for another blood test to see how they’re doing. How high are the platelets?

DumbledoresWand · 10/06/2023 13:30

@feeona123 in March they were 550, then up in May to 680.. I don't think they themselves were a massive concern, but now with the FIT test score of 112 when anything over 10 is apparently a concern.... much as I'm trying not to wish my time on holiday away, I do feel the GP call can't come quick enough!
Hope your next test shows your platelets are stable x

Hey - not sure of your age but have you ever had a colonoscopy?
Re the fit test - i had a positive fit test last month.
Had a colonoscopy then
Had multple polyps removed from my bowel

Now awaiting biopsy results

A pos fit test can mean a bleed in you - many things can be a cause of bledding - polyps - bengin , pre cancerous or non cancerous in your bowel maybe
Equally - irritable bowel disease..
Hameriods
Etc
Can / could cause bleeding

Do you have cancer history in your family?
Have you ever had a gastroscopy or colonoscopy ?

DumbledoresWand · 10/06/2023 14:30

@worldwidetravel2017 ... I had a colonoscopy around 8yrs ago, and assume that will be the next step once I've spoken to the GP on the 23rd... I'm 54 with no cancer history in the family, I'm an only child, dad died aged 89 from pneumonia, and mum is in good health aged 87.
Increased platelets 'can' be a sign of cancer. My chest xray was clear, still waiting for an ultrasound

Fingers crossed for you
Have u asked 4 the blood test 2 rule out ovarian cancer ?

DumbledoresWand · 10/06/2023 21:20

@worldwidetravel2017 I had full bloods done when my platelets were first shown to be raised.
CA125 score is within range.. have a date for an ultrasound the week I'm back from holiday..

Hi, sorry to hear this. I wondered how your colonoscopy went? I have a family member going through a similar thing.. high platelets and high fit test currently awaiting colonoscopy.

@Daffodil0407 my colonoscopy in itself was ok. I had the sedation, and everyone is right, taking the prep the day before is worse than the procedure.
I had a very small polyp, which was removed, and blamed for my positive FIT test. The results from that came back as benign.
The heamatology depth at the hospital said as all the major tests had come back with no issues, to try increasing my iron count, which had been low on blood tests.
I've been on iron for 4 mths, had a blood test last month, and my platelet count has come down. I'm still taking the iron, and have another blood test in January.
I was convinced something sinister was going on, and am grateful for all the tests/investigations i had - hopefully it will be a positive outcome for your family member

@DumbledoresWand thank you for replying. So glad everything came back clear for you. Us like you were, can't help but think the worst. So it's nice hearing a positive outcome. Praying we have a positive outcome too

Iron can be low due to serious liver issues as im learning

This should be checked/ discussed more

There are liver bloods they can easily do that are liver cancer markers and liver protein feto something something

4 me it was a bit different as ct scan picked up multiple abnormalities including high density in left lobe of liver

I had v low iron - they didnt find cause / poss cause til many months later

Anyone with low iron should be considered 4 liver issues tbh

I say this as someone who also had positive qfit test and polyps removed
