Eye twitch for months

Elliejane · 05/06/2023 19:16

Hi
Can anyone provide some advice or reassurance. I started with a twitch in lower right eye lid nearly 2 mths ago . It was just occasionally at first and I thought it would just go like all previous times as in past longest has been 2 days .

However in last 2 weeks it has got much more frequent . Although for 3 days last week it nearly went away and was only maybe 10 times a day and I was delighted only for it to reappear worse again on Friday and no improvement. It is like every few mins now .

I have read into it and it seems to be caused by stress fatigue or caffeine . I was not overly stressed before I started with it but longer it going on I am getting very anxious it will never ever go or is something serious causing it . I don’t think I am fatigued and don’t drink any caffeine so it not that .

I do work on computers all day but was on holiday from wed last week and it worse .

I have tried eye drops which made no difference and heat pads . Started to take vitamin b yesterday .

I have optician on Sunday so will ask her

I know it’s only an eye twitch but it is starting to get me down . It can be achy at times too and sometimes feels like have excess water in eye but not often .

Any tips on what to try to get rid of it . Anyone has it this long and how did it go ?

Low magnesium can cause eye twitching. Low Vitamin D can cause it too, along with low B12.

tillyandmilly · 05/06/2023 20:08

I have this right eyelid off and on - been told its stress !

Bluemat · 05/06/2023 20:13

I had this not long ago, it went on for ages. It really began to stress me out but eventually it did stop on its own.

GoddessOfFire · 05/06/2023 20:13

High blood pressure can cause this.

LaMariposa · 05/06/2023 20:14

I get this. Mine is tiredness/stress/caffeine related.
So basically if I can quit work and coffee it would go away. Ha.

LilyLemonade · 05/06/2023 20:16

I get this. Magnesium supplements have worked for me but I also get it if I’m staring at a screen for long hours.

Lolacat1234 · 05/06/2023 20:17

I had this from October 2022 to March 23. I had been taking vitaminD high dose 4000iu without taking magnesium alongside, taking high doses of vit D deplete your magnesium so it got really bad, it was my upper eyelid and it would twitch violently for 5 mins at a time up to 20 times a day. Then the opposite eyebrow started too. I started taking 300mg magnesium daily and it didn't just stop completely, it improved over a month or so until it stopped. Even if you're not taking vit D you might have depleted magnesium so I would suggest trying it!x

Another vote here for magnesium and vit d. I had this for ages and it drove me crazy.
Still have stress and caffeine but the eye twitch stopped now I'm on two x high dose vit d and magnesium daily

Frazzled2108 · 05/06/2023 20:43

I've had this on and off since December. It's driving me crazy too!

Desiree88 · 05/06/2023 20:52

Are you on any medication? Some medications can cause this

Tanfastic · 05/06/2023 20:56

I had an eye twitch for three months when I first started my new job. It went away and never had it since so I'm assuming it was stress related and the amount I had to learn/concentrate on. It was really annoying though!

Randomuser9876 · 05/06/2023 21:21

I had this and a few related things after covid... seems to be going away after 3 months

SeasonsBleatings · 05/06/2023 21:22

The last time I had a twitchy eye for months I needed a new prescription for my glasses.

ChristmasKraken · 05/06/2023 21:22

I had this. Ended up having a blood test and it turned out my b12 was VERY low. It happens every time I'm due my injection now.

Mine was caused by a calcium storm and I was put on a huge dose of calcium whilst I was in hospital (having surgery) and for about three months after.

kirinm · 05/06/2023 23:39

How strange! I've had this really intensely for a couple of weeks and I've fairly recently started taking vitamin D supplements. I've also been struggling with restless legs so maybe I need magnesium!

Elliejane · 06/06/2023 18:59

Hi
The message I posted last night still not been approved .
Thanks to everyone for posting . Few interesting things to try and funny enough I did start vitamin D a few months ago but not been that good at remembering to take it . Will order some magnesium? Would a spray work as think have one somewhere ?

Today still twitching away but the morning was better than yesterday but then it came back with vengeance again after lunch .

So strange as never had it more than a day or 2 in my life .

I don’t have high blood pressure or did not last time I was tested

I am 51 but not heard of it as a peri menopause symptom?

Keep suggestions coming.

Take a good multivitamin and ignore it, it will go away. I had an eye twitch as first covid symptom but it only lasted a few days.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/06/2023 21:45

It's also a common one post covid and/or vaccines- as is buzzing twitching in lower legs and feet- it is chronically annoying I agree-

bananabug · 17/11/2023 15:57

Sorry, I know this is an old thread, but I have the same problem and wondered if it went away eventually? My left eye (lower lid) has been twitching every 10-15 mins for 3 months now. I quit alcohol (54 days sober) and quit coffee to see if that would help but it's still twitching. It's starting to get me down a bit. :-(

Elliejane · 17/11/2023 19:19

@bananabug op here . it lasted about 5-6 mths then just went away . Sometimes for days then would come back then eventually just went totally . Nothing really made much difference but I think when I stopped getting annoyed over it , that helped the most .

since then I have developed posterior vitreous detachment in other eye with big floaters and flashing lights which is much worse . Again hoping it goes in time it goes too.

Try not to focus on it and it will go in time and it’s nothing serious

bananabug · 17/11/2023 19:29

Thanks so much for the update. Glad it cleared up for you in the end. Did you ever work out what was causing the twitching?

Oh no, sorry you have another eye problem now. Xx :-( What caused the detachment?

Elliejane · 17/11/2023 23:09

No never knew what it was .

Posterior vitreous detachment happens to everyone as they get older but if you are short sighted it can happen earlier . Most people have no symptoms but some like me get more floaters and flashing lights . There is a risk also of a retina detachment which is serious .

The right eye which was twitchy one has already detached with no issues. Left one is still detaching . Google it . It’s common but I never heard of it until I started getting funny flashes in my side vision at night and floaters like something on my eye that moves about all time 🙈
