So Friday night I tripped over a step and broke my arm which is now in plaster. I'm on dihydrydecodeine (sp). This is the 2nd broken arm I've had, the last one was only in 2021. I'm very aware opiate drugs make you constipated but I've been taking senokot and loads of water and I've not pooed since Friday. Normally I poo about twice a day.

I've got a fracture clinic appointment on Friday, but at what point does this become urgent?

My go to treatment is dried apricots and my husbands going to get some but any other treatments?

I'm not wanting to go and straight btw. I'm not needing or wanting to go at all.i was terribly constipated last time, it was so difficult 😳

I was prescribed dihydrocodeine after I broke my coccyx, so I know how you feel! Lactulose liquid is brilliant, you can buy big bottles cheaply OTC in pharmacies - it can take a couple of days to work, but it's a massive relief when it does! Senokot/Fybogel etc did absolutely nothing for me.

A tin of prunes should sort you out

SophieJo · 06/06/2023 07:54

As a last resort, use a suppository.

Codeine is terrible for this. Why prescribers don't warn people is beyond me. Prunes, lactulose and loads of extra liquid will help, but after 3 days you will probably need glycerine suppositories to shift the blockage.
Senocot is fairly gentle.

I have gone today (thanks apricots!). I've been trying to get an econsult to my GP for more painkillers but if you don't get them on the dot of 9 you're fucked but will will let them know.

Oh do they still sell syrup of figs? That used to sort me out. I think I'll get lactose and/or suppositories.

You need Fybrogel. It's granules that dissolve in 300ml of water and it tastes orange flavoured.

You can buy laxido or movicol sachets over the counter these will help whilst you are taking the opioid.
