Help with glasses prescription pls

Can anyone help us understand this glasses
prescription please?
My husband has been given this today and needs help to understand it. He did ask
at the opticians but didn’t understand the explanation. does he need varifocals?

That is a really, really mild prescription. I’m -9.50 in both eyes for comparison! I have varifocals too. I think with that prescription he would be better just to go and try some of the off the shelf / ready made reading glasses you can find at Boots and Superdrug. You’ll save a ton of money that way. It’s the +1.75 he will need to look for in the readers. The - bit is how short sighted he is and it’s barely anything.

(Varifocals mean you have the short sighted - bit and then a bit where the + bit is at the bottom of the lens in a gradual blend).

I wouldn't have thought he needs verifocals maybe reading glasses. Was he advised to have them? If he does a computer job he might like some glasses focused towards that. Save him having to put his reading glasses on and off.

He has been advised to have varifocals, seems a lot of money through the opticians though, hence the query. Thanks for the help so far.

Does your husband already wear glasses for short sightedness?

If not, or if he wears contacts, I would probably buy some cheapo ones from Amazon/boots in the right prescription. You can even buy them in Poundland I think!

If he's also short sighted then I wonder if this is somehow just a prescription for the long sighted part, but I don't really know.

Slightly long sighted (the +0.25 in both eyes) with a slight astigmatism in the right eye (the -0.25)

The Add bit is an addition for reading

I wouldn't get varifocals for that prescription and would maybe just get the reading glasses.

Remember you don't need to buy glasses from where you had the eye test and can shop around and get a second opinion about the options of glasses

Yes, I know that. That's why I asked if he was Also Short Sighted? Because if he's just long sighted I can't understand why he would need varifocals.

I clearly didn't make myself very clear in my post though, I do see that reading it back.

Ah, I had got myself in a muddle actually you're totally right - i wasn't realding the first part of the prescription as short sighteness, I was thinking they were both for astigmatism ansnthe long sightedness was just at the end, and was then baffled as to why he'd need varifocals for what looked like a very simple reading prescription with a tiny bit of astigmatism.

Serves me right for not looking back up how optometry prescriptions work!

Hey 👋🏻 I’m an optometrist! (Not the one who examined your husband!) This shows he has very good distance vision with no significant prescription needed but glasses are needed for reading, he could either:

1. Buy some off the peg ready readers + 2.00 or get some made up at an opticians. I very rarely advise use of ready mades as the person needs to have an equal prescription in both eyes and very little astigmatism for them to work, but your husband is one of the rare few that I would suggest them to. Any reading glasses, ready made or prescription make your distance vision blurred when on so he couldn’t look up in them, he’d need to take them on and off when needed which is impractical in a lot of jobs. Or:
2. Get varifocals. He wouldn’t have to wear them full time, but when he did have them on to read if he looked up he would be able to see fine as the top part of the lens would be focussed for distance vision (v weak in this case) This is a lot more practical than taking glasses on and off all the time and in some jobs essential.

Readers at best - he should try 1.5 ready readers and if taking them on and for reading drives him demented then and only then should he consider varifocals

He has a very mild distance prescription but needs +2.00 off the peg ready readers.

But this depends slightly on his day to day life. If taking them on and off to read will be a pain the varifocals might be better. For example if he’s a delivery driver where he needs to be looking at paperwork when driving, or a doctor where he needs to look at people and then write things down, they might be better.

Sorry I’ve just re read the prescription and saw I have read it as a minus when it was a plus. I need a test! 😳😆

If he does decide to go for varifocals, based on how low his prescription is and that he doesn't have any real significant deficits I'd suggest just getting them from Asda opticians as they do a fixed price of about £80 for frames with whatever lenses you need even varifocals so it would be a lot cheaper than most other opticians.
