Is that all they test for? I go yearly and the nurse took two vials of blood this morning. I can't remember but I'm sure I only used to give one? Didn't want to ask what the second was for Blush

Why wouldn't you want to ask?

BIWI · 01/06/2023 11:54

(Sorry, I can't answer your actual question though!)

Bargellobitch · 01/06/2023 11:56

It's your blood sugar over a period of a few months.

LIZS · 01/06/2023 11:57

They might run other basic tests for infection, iron levels, kidney function etc

Bargellobitch · 01/06/2023 11:57

Sorry misread. They often do vitamin and mineral levels at the same time. So probs that.

Rockbird · 01/06/2023 12:13

They'll probably do everything, cholesterol, liver function, blood count all that stuff. When I go for a hba1c I get a whole host of figures back!

HRTeatime · 01/06/2023 12:16

Do you have diabetes, or are they checking as you are pre diabetic? If you have diabetes they should annually check your lipids, U&Es (to keep an eye on your kidney function), liver profile, full blood count.

I asked them to do a cholesterol check when I got my HBA1C, and my results came back with a whole bunch of other data too like liver function. Just ask the nurse, they won’t think it’s odd .

Bluebells1970 · 01/06/2023 13:23

I get HbA1c, kidney and liver function, cholesterol levels and a full blood count.

Do you remember if the vials were differently-coloured? If they were, then they would be testing for different things as well. If there were two the same it could also be a policy of the clinic to take two samples in case there was a problem with one (not enough blood/haemolysis during collection/storage or transport problems, damage to the tube, etc.) This saves you the hassle of needing to return for a re-collect.

Fraaahnces · 01/06/2023 14:47

*Also sometimes they take a different vial just in case your doctor calls the lab and asks them to test for something else. If it is collected, stored and delivered properly, it can stay at the lab for about a week.
