Horrendous throat and ear pain when swallowing

Has anyone experienced this as I have never felt this before. It’s been 10 days and no improvement even after a round of penicillin.I also have the worst cough and blocked ear that I ever had. I have barely ate in 10 days because the pain when swallowing is so bad.

Can you go back to the doctor? You might need a different antibiotic.

Did you get your throat swabbed?

so sorry, it sounds awful.

Me too. I feel like death warmed up

kangaroopelicanartic · 30/05/2023 21:27

Covid? I lost pounds from the sore throat 🙁

The numbing throat spray helped!

Mine literally feels like my throat is being sliced with razor blades when I swallow. I have a big work deadline this week too.

Tonsillitis is extremely painful! Have you had a look, can you see lots of pus on your tonsils? Did someone have a look in your throat/ears before giving the antibiotics? Has theee been any change over the 10 days? Any swelling?

Icanflyhigh · 30/05/2023 22:12

Nasty dose of tonsillitis going round currently, I've had two courses of phenylmethylpenicilin at 10 days (4 doses per day) and it still hasn't completely cleared. Go back to GP and ask for more antibiotics x

I have an appointment with the doctor tomorrow but I am terrified he is going to tell me it looks fine. I had a look and I can’t see any white spots or pus although the roof of my mouth looks quite red.

I just thought that after 5 days of penicillin that if there was an infection it would have improved even slightly.

Not all antibiotics work on all bacteria. You probably need a swab taking and culture done to see what will be effective.

Get some numbing throat spray - it really helps! Ice lollies, too.

DH had this last year. GP tried 2 different antibiotics. Made no difference. Same symptoms as you OP. Went private as he couldn't eat and was suffering. Got a next day appointment, the Dr put a camera up his nose to get a closer look. Turned out to be a fungal infection and was given anti fungal meds same day which cleared it up quickly in about a week. Also took a swab. Ask for anti fungal meds from your GP to rule it out.

I've also just been prescribed Clarithromycin over the phone and have sent DH to get it. Fingers crossed it kicks in quickly since last night was horrendous.

Dr also gave me Co Codamol 30/500 which seems to be easing the pain as Ibuprofen didn’t even touch it. The main issue just now is the blocked ear which is so frustrating.

Turns out it was an Ear infection. Still have the blocked ear though.
