Painful chest, weakness/breathlessness, no fever, no cough?

I'm just posting this under this throwaway because I've posted another health problem recently and I don't want people to point to that and say it's the cause because I don't think it's connected.

Since the end of last week I've suddenly had a painful chest and breathlessness even at rest (sitting down). Stupidly, I decided to power through and went for a long run, thinking I could shake it off but the next morning I was soooo weak and ill feeling but it's really weird and hard to describe. Not a cold at all, and not flu, but definitely feeling very unwell.

I spent most of yesterday lying on my bed (missing a rare meet up with friends and all the nice weather 🙁). I was too weak to do any household tasks. I just had this painful chest and out of breath feeling. I slept hours and hours even during the day and couldn't stay awake.

Having rested and slept excessively yesterday, today I am able to move around the house and stay awake but my chest still hurts and now there seems to be some slight mucous (spelling?) on my lungs (not much though, not buckets loads that you have with a winter bug for example).

There's no cough and no temperature (that I can tell without a thermometer). Just fatigue, breathlessness, lung or chest pain and slight mucous. No nasal/head symptoms like snot or anything you get with a cold. It's just really bizarre, I don't know what it is at all and I've never had anything like this before. Yesterday I even got worried I was having some kind of serious heart issue!

Any ideas on what on earth this could be? Why do my lungs hurt so much?

Obviously the timing's terrible in terms of consulting a doctor 🙄and I'm "saving" any emergency/urgent consultations due to this other health condition I'm dealing with atm (nothing lung/chest related), where I might really need to contact them and ask for urgent attention.

Thank you for any thoughts/advice.

I’d suggest bronchitis or similar, you need your chest listening to.
However, I don’t know what your other post is, but chest pain and breathlessness can also be a symptom of anxiety.

throwaway78 · 28/05/2023 12:35

Definitely not anxiety! Absolutely not. I've been as ill as hell the past few days. (My other post isn't about anxiety btw).

If you're thinking anxiety because I mentioned the possibility of a heart issue, that's just because my first symptom was a sharp pain when taking a deep breath. Then it progressed rapidly to being unwell, breathlessness and the slight mucous.

You need to go get checked out OP. Chest pain and breathlessness warrants medical attention especially with such acute onset.

throwaway78 · 28/05/2023 13:13

I've now got more mucous than earlier on so now I'm guessing some kind of lung infection? God knows why though, at this time of year. I've been in and out of doctor's and hospitals, though, due to the other condition I mentioned so maybe I picked something up there? 🤔

I don't know why no cough or temperature, though.

I don't know why I went for that run! That was a bloody stupid thing to do, excuse my language 😓

Chest pain and breathlessness warrants being checked out. You’re not getting enough oxygen for some reason.

CostOfSieving · 28/05/2023 17:19

You could have a pulmonary embolism. I tried to power through with mine and had no idea my symptoms were something so serious. Please get this checked NOW.

Stepbumpstepbumpbump · 28/05/2023 17:32

Anaemia perhaps? Fatigue and breathlessness are common. Might be worth getting some bloods done to check

Moopsi · 28/05/2023 22:44

These are serious symptoms and could be heart related or pulmonary embolism. I think regardless of your other health issue you end to go to A&E or at least call 111. Although they will just tell you to go to A&E.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 28/05/2023 22:52

I get a tight chest and feel breathless when my iron is super low. However, it’s never caused mucous.

CrotchetyQuaver · 29/05/2023 13:20

I'd go and get that checked out, I would also add spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung) to the list of possibilities. Diagnosed from a chest x ray.

throwaway78 · 31/05/2023 18:44

I still have the weakness and shortness of breath, the chest pain is somewhat better but still there.

I had the most useless telephone appointment over this just now. The doctor asked me what happened, wrote it down, asked me my height and weight, then started asking me if I'm under stress. I said "it's not stress" which clearly bothered him.

I cannot be more categorical about this: it's NOT STRESS.

He said he'd make some notes for my usual GP. I said, well, do you have any ideas as to what it could be? and he just sort of went silent.

No-one's going to believe me unless I literally get carted off to A&E in an ambulance, it seems. I'm so tired of the NHS.

So it looks like I've got to ask my relatives if they will pay for a private cardiologist for me.

Worst GP appointment ever.

No tests ordered, no referral, nada. Completely pointless.

OP posts:
throwaway78 · 31/05/2023 18:45

It was like a joke GP appointment.

God help anyone who gets seriously ill the way things are right now.

Is your pulse regular?

throwaway78 · 31/05/2023 19:07

It's OK now, at the height of this thing the heart rate was going up and down: 49/56/78/60/52/58/70/ like that (no I wasn't moving).

I guess I'm going to have to go to A and E, I'm just going to be another person clogging up A&E unnecessarily 🙄

Hey! I know such a late reply but just wandered if this ever resolved and what was it? V similar to what ive had over the last few weeks!

Delatron · 02/01/2025 19:16

Sounds like what I had for weeks. Only symptoms were major fatigue and chest pain. And the jumpy heart rate. I suspect it was Covid but I didn’t have any tests. It took a long time to shake and I haven’t had so much as had a cold for a year. Just this weird virus.
