Liver function 10 times normal levels

Hi everybody, not sure what I'm looking for here, maybe a bit of advice or positivity to stop me catastrophising.
Had a blood test today first thing in the morning and was quite surprised to get a call from the doctor just after lunch.
The results show that my liver function results are over 300 which is ten times what they should be. I went for the blood test because of recurring abdominal pain since October, plus occasional orange wee.
Has anybody experienced this sort of result and had it be resolved easily/not a big deal in the end?
I'm a bit of a worrier so any reassurance would be great.
Thank you!

Our son (7) had very high liver results, they found no underlying cause and put it down to long covid as it rectified itself over a few months.

I hope you get the answers you need, it was a worrying time but hopefully it’s all okay for youb

DrHousecuredme · 23/05/2023 22:29

Thank you!
My issues started after having Covid in June and again in October so it is a possibility.
Logically I realise that it's highly likely to be something that is easily fixable... I just need to stay off Google.

My sis in law went yellow after covid.

Her levels gradually went back to normal.

Hopefully it's something like this for you.

Such a crazy illness.

sparebooks · 23/05/2023 23:01

I had the same, an urgent phone call telling me the levels were sky high and they couldn't believe I wasn't feeling more unwell.

In my case it turned out to be a rare side effect from some medication I'd been on. Maybe not relevant to your situation but worth considering.

DrHousecuredme · 24/05/2023 06:16

@sparebooks yes I'd just started taking something as they thought the pain might be a stomach ulcer. I knew it wasn't agreeing with me as it made me sick. He said it would be "extremely rare but not impossible" so I've come off it just in case.
Thanks for that 😊

So is that the plan? Stop taking your ?PPI*, and then a repeat blood test?

*Sorry if I've assumed wrongly. I'm on Omeprazole myself, the slightly better drug Lansoprazole makes me feel ill! There's virtually no med on the market that doesn't give me side-effects. My GP must love me ...

DrHousecuredme · 24/05/2023 12:51

Yes that's the plan, wait and see what the next blood test shows.
I was on Lansoprazole I think it was and yes it made be feel sick and absolutely rubbish so I'm quite happy to come off it.

I had similar and it goes up and down. All tests other than bloods were clear. I had ultrasound to double check.

My GP said they don’t worry unless the number is in the 000s. Hundreds is fine.

When I went into A&E with unbearable stomach pains my liver function was off the charts (& they accused me of being an alcoholic), turned out it was gallstones. No idea if that's your issue, but just my experience.

DrHousecuredme · 24/05/2023 14:28

Oh that's interesting, thank you!!

Depends what it was- alt? GGT? All the enzymes represent different functions and possible different causes.

stackhead · 24/05/2023 15:02

I'd point towards gallbladder issues, potentially a partially blocked bile duct causing issues.

My liver bloods were high when I had gallbladder issues. My wee was orange when I got jaundice from a blocked bile duct.

Same here.

Yes, I had this exact thing. A gallstone was blocking a part of the liver and gave results like I was an alcoholic. I was grilled on how much I drank and then specifically when I last had a drink..."a glass of red with dinner a week ago", produced an eye-rolley doctor who, in his defense, did further tests and the cause became clear.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/05/2023 15:49

'A gallstone was blocking a part of the liver' - or technically, it's exit, I suppose.

toomanyleggings · 24/05/2023 15:52

I had that once and then they repeated it and it was normal.

MrsCarson · 24/05/2023 16:00

My liver enzymes were high for years and we couldn't get them down. Then when I was having bloods taken again in 2017, someone had added on the test for gluten/coeliacs. Which came back super high. After a couple of years of gluten free my enzymes were normal level along with my Cholesterol is normal

All 3 were similarly high he said. He did give specific figures but I was in the car so couldn't make a note.

Thanks everybody, so given the symptoms I went to the GP for in the first place, gallstones could well be a culprit.
Thank you everybody who replied I feel much more chilled about it now 😆

Thats interesting my function results were in the very high 200's so no where near the 000s but my Dr said they were very very worried by it becuase all other bloods were normal apart from slightly high cholestoel

Can I ask what the outcome of these results were as it looks like mine are very similar and worried!!!

I've just had normal bloods returned after a high reading last month. No idea what was behind it but I was on the way out of an RSV so maybe that? So many things seem to upset the liver, some of them very random. I too had an upset stomach from lansoprazole and had to stop taking it, but reflux symptoms seem to have cleared up after I cut right down on caffeine. Good luck, op, I had an anxious xmas worrying about this but it turned out to be nothing much.
