4 week aggressive cough

Just as it says in the title really. Obviously there's much worse to be experiencing, but my DH is now in his 4th week of an aggressive cough that doesn't seem to be improving.

Some considerations:

  • it started as a nasty virus (which I also had), but the cough is the only symptom remaining.
  • he's vomiting daily from it as it makes him gag.
-he's seen the Dr who prescribed a steroid nasal spray last week and wasn't concerned. He's checked his throat and it's not strep or anything like that.
  • he's tried lots of OTC remedies to try to provide some relief, or at least to let the throat heal somewhat. These don't help for more than an hour or so.
-he's also tried salt water gargling, honey etc.

Is there anything else he can do to actively repair his throat. It sounds as though (and apparently feels like) it isn't improving in any way and we've got some time off next week and I'd love for I'd to be able to enjoy a couple of family days out after a miserable month! Any suggestions would be VERY welcome!

I would ask at a chemist.

He really needs to have a chest xray after 3 weeks.
But I had a cough that sounded very similar and it lasted for almost 2 months.
I had a chest xray and blood tests, and was prescribed a blue inhaler (after 2 lots of antibiotics).
