My little girl is a poo holder !
so we've been on movicol and doing great - I stupidly stopped it and we went 8 days of a demonic child resulting in an out of hours apt - she got a 2mg suppository and we have got others

but since then she's not moved again the doctor at the hospital told us to give the 3 of them over 24 hours
but she had a massive movement so we didn't - it's now 5 days later 3 movicol sachets a day and nothing ...
should we use the other suppositories and if so how many a day can you give because I can't find any info on this ...

thanks

I sympathise. I had an absolutely awful time with a slow gut as a child. No movement for days, weeks sometimes, and then ..well a lot at once.

I remember movicol. And fibogel. Not well enough to comment on daily dose though so will leave that to others. Bit some behavioural things / other remedies.

I have no problems now as an adult which may be to do with brown seeded bread for breakfast and gallons of tea. Especially huge mug of tea first thing. When she's stuck, several mugs of boiled water, tea, coffee may help and squatting opens up the tubes which can help movement.

Another childhood phenomenon was sometimes the urge would come at what I considered an inopportune time (god knows 🙄) and it's important not to ignore it, to go when your sluggish gut tells you it wants to.

Hang in there.

My son was exactly like this up until he was about 5. He’s 8 now and much better.

Key for us was consistency - Movicol every day regardless.

We were told by the home visit nurse that water pulls sugar to the bowel so he was allowed a special treat of apple slices with a brown sugar dip when we were in a few days with no movement. That always helped.

We had a stool near the loo because knees up helped.

When we used suppositories it was usually one did the trick but something if the poo was quite impacted then the one glycerine wouldn’t be enough to soften/lubricate it so often a nice bath on the warm side and a second application would be needed.
Our nurse said to buy an adult pack and use one on ourselves to get an understanding of how it feels for the little one and that did help ease what felt like a guilt-ridden horror of applying it to him.

I hope things improve for you like they have for us. He still finds doing a poo quite awful but it’s a natural and painless experience for him now and he does go regularly new if he sometimes needs a reminder to ‘listen to his body’ when we can smell his wind at 400 paces 😂.

Thanks ladies ❤️

she was going so well with the movicol but I just assumed she would be able by now ,
clealry not ☹️ which is fine I'm willing to continue I just didn't think it would be this bad this quick .@Mamof2boys21and8 can I ask was it two suppository's in the same day ? I'm working all weekend so I was thinking of doing two today one am one pm ?

I just can't find any info and the doc did say to use them all in 24 hours 😭 xx

Hi yeah I sometimes had to use two in a couple of hours if nothing was shifting. They usually worked within the 1/2 hr but if no joy we’d try again a couple of hours later.

And even when he was going on his own we kept up with the movicol until he was confident and over the ‘fear’

Thank you I think I will do another tonight as I've just noticed it's just the one mg she has !

yeah she's back on the movicol again for foreseeable.

hopefully things get moving again soon x
