Gastritis?

Hi everyone, I did a previous post about this but didn't get much luck in responses, I'm trying to avoid going to the doctors regarding this, last year I developed mid stomach pain and very bad. Nothing really relieved it not even buscopan and it was much worse after eating within minutes! It is the exact same and last time it lasted over a month before it went, doctors had no idea what it was :( it is back and again so painful middle of my stomach also radiating to the bottom of my stomach, it just came out of nowhere! I noticed I had bad acid reflux and then the next day bam, it's back. I am wondering if I am suffering from gastritis and this is what it is as I have been extremely stressed for the past week due to work, it does say stress can trigger this. I'm just looking for anyone's experiences and if this does indeed sound like gastritis? What can I do? The pain is always there in the background even if it is low in pain, it's still there. I've had it since Saturday but because it is so similar to before I'm scared it's not going to go again for a month! I will also add I am struggling to use the toilet, also out of nowhere as I was going normally until Saturday! This was also the case last time aswell, felt the urge to go but nothing would come

You need a gastroenterologist referral.

Malarandras · 16/05/2023 18:02

I have had gastritis frequently and yes it sounds like it. The only thing that worked was PPIs like Omeprazole. But you do need to speak to a doctor of this is a recurring/ worsening problem.

Had it for years ongoing, having reflux coming up on omperazole 20 Mg bed raised eat healthily can’t eat any spiced food, choc and caffeine makes it worse, should go for endoscopy but I’m too much of a wuss. It’s painful.

It sounds alot like IBS. I am currently going through a flare up that started two weeks ago. Everything I eat I am in pain afterwards. It's really no fun at all. Lansoprazole used to really ease symptoms but this time it hasn't. Do you get stomach cramps that move about and bloating?

Yes this is exactly it. Everything I am eating I'm getting severe cramps within 10 minutes, it's horrific!

It's weird though because it first started last year for a month, it went I genuinely assumed it was a stomach bug and now I suddenly have it again 9 months later completely normal inbetween, it's odd!

I was going to leave it for two weeks to see if it went on it's own again but now I'm worrying there could be something underlying as this happened around 9 months ago, it does seem like a very long break inbetween though to be the same thing but maybe it is

That's what IBS does, you get flare ups every so often that come out of nowhere! I could eat fatty foods, spicy food etc no problem during a non flare up but have to stay well clear during one. It is horrific 😢 even water hurts. I hope doesn't last too much longer, sending hugs x

Strangely enough I just had my doctors appointment with a paramedic as no docs available, she told me my stool sample from last year was not clear and actually shown inflammation markers on my IBD test, she said this would signal that I do indeed have IBS she said not high enough for IBD but definitely high enough for IBS

@emilyyyyloox
did you ever get to the bottom of your symptoms? X

Ellie54320 · 17/01/2025 10:41

Hey, I've had gastritis quite a few times it's one of those things that once you have once you tend to get again if you overdo it i.e. drink lots of alcohol, eat spicy foods etc. Mines flared up a bit now post christmas so I was expecting it! You should get a referral to have a camera check it out to be sure. Have you had a stool test for H.Pylori? If this is positive it's more likely to be an ulcer but the symptoms with an ulcer and gastritis are really really similar. Supplements are the worst thing for me like garlic/fish oil tablets they really set me off as they're concentrated and burn the lining. Make sure you're off all tablets (especially ibuprofen!) and just take it easy. If you see a good GP they will give you Omeprazole which will reduce your tummy acid, bear with it this can take a couple of weeks to start working it's not a quick fix so don't stop taking them. If you really don't want to go to the GP get some Nexium in a pharmacy/Tesco/Waitrose, it's expensive but trust me it works! I would see a GP though it's always wiorth getting a stool test/camera down to be sure what your dealing with. Mine showed burning all over my stomach and duodenum, seeing it made me realise why the tablets didn't work straight away! Take care x

BTW my friend has IBS and I have Gastritis and we have VERY different symptoms, my main problem is a burning gnawing pain just under my rib cage that I just can't get away from (similar to when you have an ulcer) hers is more generalised stomach and bowl problems and not so focused in that singular area. You should definately speak to a GP, there's no harm in it x
