Pancreatic cancer worries

Hi everyone, I have an appointment with my GP today and I’m freaking out.

For the last couple of months I’ve had slowly increasing symptoms. Started with a muscular strain type feeling around my upper abdomen as if I had been doing lots of core work (but hadn’t). Just put it down to a muscle strain from something unknown.

That progressed in the last few weeks to clear pain in upper right quadrant, sometimes left too, sometimes middle - around stomach, gallbladder area. It can be stabbing or gnawing, or even just aching. I get indigestion symptoms of burping, inappropriate hunger and also inappropriate fullness at times. No reflux or acid though.

The pain is pretty constant but not the to the degree of a gallbladder attack - I have seen how painful that can be in a person. It’s probably a 5/10 max. It also radiates to my back, bra line and between shoulder blades. That pain can be a killer, maybe 7/10 and is only helped a little with hot water bottles. Some days are worse than others but it hasn’t gone and seems to be getting steadily worse. Doesn’t seem to matter what I eat.

Accompanying this, I’m having loose stools, yellow, much lighter than usual, fluffy with undigested food and generally extremely smelly (I’m really sorry for the tmi). Not white or grey, just lighter and looser.

I’ve lost about half a stone which I can’t afford as already slim, appetite gone but forcing myself to eat as much as possible as am scared by the weight loss. I’m also having some night sweats, but that could be my age, 46. However it is a new thing.

No jaundice or itching which is a positive I guess. Energy not awful, still managing to get up and about, although the pain is preventing me doing too much.

I had something similar, but to a very much milder degree last year which was finally diagnosed as H Pylori. That was treated and symptoms eventually went away after a few months. When I was having this problem I had a private CT and Ultrasound in Jan 2022, as well as endoscopy and colonoscopy. The CT and Ultrasound found nothing worrying, not even a gallstone, just gastritis and HP.

The thing is that I’ve absolutely convinced myself this is something awful like pancreatic cancer, and my anxiety is through the roof. I keep trying to say to myself that the CT scan and Ultrasound would have picked up anything pancreatic then, wouldn’t they?

But then I read that it’s very hard to diagnose and I spiral and wonder if this has been my silently increasing problem all along and I’ve been misdiagnosed and now I might be terminal. I’m just beside myself now, I have a husband and son who need me, aging parents who rely on me.

I don’t mean to be fear mongering or catastrophic thinking, but my pain and symptoms are really very real and I’m scared. Does anyone have any advice? Anyone gone through similar and it’s turned out to be something minor? What should I ask my doctor for? Any advice would be so gratefully received.

OP my Mum died of pancreatic cancer. It is a truly horrible cancer. She went yellow. She could not keep anything down and at the end vomited shit. She lost 5 1/2 stone in weight over 6 months. She had scans and a tube with the camera down her throat. MRI scan showed tumour in pancreas but by then it had advanced too far to treat. Your symptoms sound more like gallstones which can be very painful.

I’m sorry about your poor mum, that’s a terrible thing for you to go through with her.
I haven’t gone yellow, and I’m not even nauseous, so I guess that’s both pluses. I’m just in a lot of pain. Hopefully get some test results back in a few days and can go from there.

My symptoms were exactly like you have 30 yearsago and I had a gallstone blocking the tube. Had my gallbladder out as an emergency whilst on holiday in Spain - my fault I had been having it off and on for about 8 months and still went on holiday!! Suddenly it turned acute, constantly being sick, acute constant pain. Sounds very gallbladder like to me. It isn't always agony- mine was more'annoying' for months

Bluemat · 16/05/2023 12:23

@WilsonMilson just read properly yours is upper right mine is mainly upper left sided. Does sound like yours could be gall bladder related

WilsonMilson · 16/05/2023 14:22

@Bluemat funny you should say that as it’s been erring slightly to the right side until today (although when Dr felt it she said it wasn’t far enough right to be gallbladder). Today it’s been mainly left pain. I feel bruised all along the bottom of my ribs and very tender indeed. Don’t really know what to do with myself, waiting for these blood results and then we go from there I guess. How are you doing?

Hand hold here! Sounds like an infection to me.

WilsonMilson · 16/05/2023 16:41

Yes I’ve been put on co-amoxiclav to start right away. My white cells were 19.5 which is wild.

Some of my liver enzymes are also very elevated - GGT and ALP if that means anything to anyone. My CRP is 35 and my ESR is 46 so obviously a lot of inflammation.

What I’m reading points to bile duct/liver/pancreas. I’ll keep the thread updated when I know more.

@WilsonMilson hand hold from me to you too. Try not to panic, easier said than done I know. At least you went to the GP and you have your appointment tomorrow. Please let us know how you go on Flowers

poetryandwine · 16/05/2023 17:44

Very sorry to hear this OP. Hugs and best wishes

Bluemat · 16/05/2023 17:46

Hand hold here. What time is your scan? Main thing is you're getting seen to promptly, in the meantime try not to worry yourself too much, I know that's easier said than done.

CoronationKicking · 16/05/2023 17:56

I've had similar symptoms for the last week and I'm worried too. Good luck OP x

WilsonMilson · 16/05/2023 18:15

Thanks everyone, it’s so kind of you to wish a total stranger on the internet well. This is what I love about Mumsnet, honestly it’s so nice.

@Bluemat I have to go in to the surgical ward tomorrow at 9.20am, they will scan me first apparently and take it from there.

Pain is really bad today. Can you believe that the first thing I did was go to Asda and buy some new pyjamas for hospital. I seem to have gone into some sort of weird organisational mode because I cannot believe this is happening.

I can only say that crp of 35 isn't particularly high. Flowers
Mine was 800 odd (can't quite recall I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis)
I can't comment on anything else as I've no idea what they are.
I'm sorry you're so worried, of course you will be, but just try and focus on the now and not the things you don't know.

Thank you. My CRP is 35, ESR is 45, my GGT is 117, ALP is 240, White cells 19.5 - the neutrophils are particularly high.

Pain has intensified quite a lot today, if I hadn’t got the time to go in tomorrow morning I think I’d have seriously considered A&E tonight with this pain.

Tuatara22 · 16/05/2023 20:32

How frightening! At least it will be taken care of soon. I'm dealing with the same pain, awful gnawing in my lower left ribs and stomach and it goes straight through me into my back. It throbs and throbs and feels like I've been kicked in the ribs and back. t's excruciating, 8/10 pain but since it's on the left it doesn't seem likely to be the gallbladder. I'm seeing the GP again on Thurs but keep contemplating going to A&E however I'm not sure what they would even do.

Do let us know what the outcome is!

Bluemat · 17/05/2023 07:27

@WilsonMilson just wanted to send you another hand hold. I have everything crossed for you today.

WilsonMilson · 17/05/2023 08:02

@Bluemat thanks that’s so kind. The pain has been bad overnight and I barely slept, so it’s a relief to be going to hospital. I just want to know what I’m dealing with here now.

☹️ at least you are getting seen and hopefully will have answers today.

OscarsAmmonite · 17/05/2023 08:12

I'll be keeping you in my thoughts Wilsonmilson. Hope they get you sorted soon 💐

adriftabroad · 17/05/2023 08:21

Good luck today. I had all these things with acute pancreatitis. But I was vomiting also. Flowers

Remaker · 17/05/2023 09:10

It’s great that you’re being taken seriously and you’re closer to getting a diagnosis. I was diagnosed with bowel cancer earlier this year and after the initial shock and adjustment I felt calmer knowing what it was and the treatment.

StevieNicksfan · 17/05/2023 09:25

Good luck today, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you x

WilsonMilson · 17/05/2023 13:01

It’s not good news. Ultrasound showed large liver tumour and smaller pancreatic one. My bloods are crazy, including very high C19-9. Waiting for CT. I’m numb. I have a child and husband. I can’t leave them.

OP posts:
FortofPud · 17/05/2023 13:08

Oh gosh, what a shock. CT will be now, or do you mean waiting for an appointment? Holding your hand Flowers

StevieNicksfan · 17/05/2023 13:13

What a terrible shock for you, big handhold from me. Have you got anyone with you? If not, can someone come to the hospital and meet you?You need support in RL xx
