Propanolol for migraines - what dosage?

I have chronic migraine for which I'm prescribed noritryptiline, that used to work but not any longer.

I'm also prescribed beta blockers to take as and when for panic attacks (10mg) but have read alot of anecdotes about how propanolol really helped peoples migraines.

If you were prescribed Propanolol for migraines what dose was you (or somebody you know) on?

I'm thinking of asking my doctor if we can increase the Propanolol in line with what is helpful for migraine. I'm at my wits end with the daily pain atm.

I take one a day. Migraines have reduced from two a week to one every 6-8 weeks. Also helped with my anxiety.

It helped my DD. It's a bit trial and error to see what and which dose works, I think. So if you're allowed to take it, probably worth a try.

80mg in morning has helped dh greatly. Still has wee niggles but nothing full blown.
ds is on topiramate and not great at all at minute. He’s reluctant to change though as tends to be v unwell when doses change etc.

I am on 10 mg x 2 a day for a wierd arrhythmia thing. The most marvellous side effect has been that my migraines completely disappeared!

Citrusnotes77 · 18/05/2023 10:22

Actually that’s not true it’s 5 mg x 2!

In other words 10 mg per day has been enough for me to banish vicious migraines forever.

Propranolol gave me terrible night terrors when I started taking it for migraines! I'm sure I was on 10mg. I used to think there were people in my room and all the shadows were people hiding. Only happened in the dark at night, Very strange! 😂. Apparently it's a really uncommon side effect, the doctor had to look it up.
I got put on topiramate after that, worked amazingly.
Migraines are awful, I hope you can get them sorted soon!

40mg twice a day. Worked a treat for a few years until I hit the peri menopause then stopped working

poppym12 · 18/05/2023 11:01

50mg for me in a morning. I don't get them as frequently and they don't seem to last 4 days any longer but I am menopausal so maybe I'd get them less anyway now

I got that from pizotifen! Dreadful, wake up screaming nightmares every single night but they were very childish dreams - fluffy monsters under the bed, chasing me down a street etc, nothing actually ghoulish or horrific, but I was exhausted after a few months. Survived a year on it because I had nil migraines but it wasn't fun.

Topiramate however left me on a horrific state. Totally zombied, the awful effects nearly cost me my career and my marriage, I was being tested for cancers and sleep apnoea because they didn't know why I was in such a state. And it didn't really work that well! Always be cautious with topiramate - lots of users report the zombie effect, but I was such a mess I didn't even realise and no one else put 2+2 together for months either. Hopefully you're nice and clear of mind, not drowsy etc with it!

Saw the doctor today, lovely chap I haven't seen before. He was really sympathetic and kind.

The plan is to increase the propanolol to 40mg per day, 20 morning and 20 afternoon/evening.

He's also said I can increase the noritryptiline to 60mg from 50mg, if I'm happy to, but doesn't want me to increase both at the same time as then we won't know what's helping more (if any)

He's going to follow up with me in a weeks time, but he's also emailing the headache specialist department insisting they need to review me in clinic ASAP as I'm overdue a review and struggling.

It's a bit difficult for GP's being primary care as once you're under secondary care / a specialist it's generally them who introduce the new meds and treatment plans.

Hopefully the higher mg or propanolol helps somewhat! I think I'll be OK RE side effects as I've been on it for so long my body is quite used to it now (she says with her fingers crossed!)
