Experience with low ferritin

Mumma02 · 05/05/2023 15:01

I've been feeling awful on and off for the last 3.5 years. I've had chronic low ferritin but now my results are worse than ever;
Hb - 123
Ferritin - 11
Iron - 6
Transferrin Saturation - 6.5% (should be at least 20!)

I have so many different things going on but would love to hear from others who have had similar numbers and know what your symptoms were so I could pin point some to the iron deficiency?

Thank you.

I had low ferritin in pregnancy, just felt like shit, exhausted, could have slept anywhere anytime. It was markedly different quickly when I started treatment. Hope things improve for you soon.

I had low ferritin during peri when l was having very heavy periods. At that time l was a vegetarian and had been for many years. I felt very tired and got out of breath when walking up hill l remember. I had prescription iron tablets for about a year and that did make a difference, as did a change of diet.

I’d had phases of feeling very tired, but I knew things were bad when my hair started thinning. Like a PP I was vegetarian at the time but once I started eating meat things got much better. I also started taking iron tablets although I wasn’t very good at taking them reliably!

Sorry to jump on an old thread but I've just had results back which are very similar to yours OP. What treatment did you have, and did it help?

Hoolahoophop · 29/09/2023 10:50

@Q2C4 I'm currently taking ferritin tablets for deficiency. I was feeling generally very run down and permanently exhausted. I am now feeling a little better on the tablets, but certainly not cured.

I just wanted to jump on here in case I can help. My ferritin levels have been around 4 for the past few years, never been above 20 in the past decade. I can't tolerate iron tablets so yesterday I went to the iron clinic in Cambridge for an infusion. It wasn't cheap, but over the course of half an hour I was given 1000mg of iron which 'should' last me 2 years.

Wow! That is impressive. How are you feeling? Any side effects yet?
Do you know what caused your ferritin to be so low? 4 is off the charts!

Justonedayatatime11 · 29/09/2023 15:23

@Q2C4 no side effects yet, thankfully. It will take around 3 months to feel completely better. I have autoimmune problems which cause autoantibodies to attack my stomach which means I can't absorb iron, b12, folate or vitamin D. It's an expensive way to fix it but it's quick and easy and right now I'd do anything to just feel better!
