Is this Viral Conjunctivitus ?

I've had a really nasty bout of flu this week and a sore throat prior to the flu coming out.

Today I noticed one of my eyes was a bit blood shot but as the day has gone on the whole eye is practically red now. I look like Vincent Price !

I haven't got any gunk in my eye but it feels bruised and very uncomfortable to blink - feeling like I have been prodded in the eye. It also feels quite dry.

I've had the odd pricking feeling too every now and again.

I've called our local out of hours medical service and just waiting for someone to call me back.

I've looked on the internet and it sounds like viral conjunctivitus. Do these symptoms sound familar to anyone else.

What treatment is there if any ? I'm supposed to be driving down to Cornwall tomorrow ...

I've just had allergic conjunctivitus which I thought was viral but the gp told me it would be gunky if viral. I got eyedrops from the pharmarcy, but they weren't enough, needed steroid drops from gp to clear it up (predsol). Your symptoms sound just like mine, vampire does it!

Hi accessorizequeen, what caused yours ?

We've had a lot of building work and painting done in the house so it's been a bit smelly and got some residue of dust lying around from the plastering we've had done. We had to move out while they were plastering.

Maybe that could have contributed although I've been coughing really badly with this flu so lots of pressure on my eyes I suspect too.

hi tillyboo, I've absolutely no idea! Never had an eye infection in my life and then in both eyes completely red for 5 days before the drops sorted it. I'd stop at a pharmacy before you set off for cornwall, it made me completely miserable, my eyes were slits every morning. Did out of hours call you back?

Tillyboo · 16/02/2008 21:51

Yep just called back and said it was conjunctivitis but the doctor said it was impossible to tell whether bacterial or viral.

I'll go to the chemist in the morning but may delay the journey until Monday. I'm staying with my brother so it doesn't matter if I leave a day late.

Must be awful for the little ones to have this, poor little mites.

It does sound like viral cj.
DC sometimes have viral cj, I just give them painkillers. It goes away after ~3 days, ime. Can't do anyting about it, but avoid eye-rubbing and do wash hands a lot to avoid spread.
If it goes oozing gunk that'd be bacteriaL cj (often viral and bacterial go together) which you might want to treat differently.

round here , viral conjunctivitis is all the rage and it apparently goes with the lovely cold cough virus thats going around!!
