Baby eczema?

My 4mo has very dry skin in patches, the HV said it might be baby eczema and cream it... have done that for a fortnight but it seems to be getting worse? Do I need to go to the doctor? Anything else I can do? He is BF.

A tub of aqueous cream from gp & oats in bath can be a good starting point. If the rash/dry patches spread then you'll need to see the gp again for stronger medication but gps start of gently to begin with as it's quite a common feature in babies, unless you also have a family history.

This is the age that it started in dd2. It developed quite quickly and quite severely. Keep your eye on it but I would suggest visiting the GP....the best cream we have (and we have tried and tested loads) is Aveeno.

Its usually the last cream that they prescribe as its expensive so just ask for it. If its infected you may have to use a steroid/antibiotic cream.

What cream are you using? I used aqueous cream (as advised by HV) on DD but to no effect, then HV prescribed Diprobase cream which worked. TBH, they often get dry skin at times but it sometimes flares up and then goes regardless of how you treat it. When DD's skin improved, I stopped using the Diprobase and never bothered to get a repeat prescription. We are back on the aqueous, or organic sunflower oil, which just about keeps her dry skin in check.

Other things to try are changing laundry detergents and fabric softeners to least chemical types that you can find.

Last resort is keeping food diary (for me was last resort as didn't have time to do it) to see if it could be triggering mild allergic reaction.

ds is startin to get patches to - the gp has given u a mild steriod cream which clears it up in a couple of days but as soon as I stop applying the cream it comes back.

Geordie, ask for Aveeno. Use them both...and once it gets a little better stop the steroid cream and continue with the Aveeno.
