Ranitidine Dosage

Hi. I have just been prescribed ranitidine for my 3 wk old ds as he has reflux. The thing is the dose prescribed is only 0.5ml 3 times a day. When my dd was on ranitidine she was taking 2.5ml twice a day (different doctors). The new dosage seems very little. What dosage are other babies taking?

When my DD2 was prescribed ranitidine she was about 6 weeks old and it was based on her weight - it started then at 0.47 ml three times a day and has since gone up to 0.5ml and its now 0.75ml which according to my GP is a generous dosage for her weight. HTH - I know how awful reflux can be, hope you get some relief from it soon! Don't forget it takes a good few days to take effect - if you don't start seeing the benefit of it after then, perhaps you should contact your GP again?

Hi

I think it depends on the babies weight.
Its a while now since my baby was taking ranitidine, but she was taking 0.3 ml tree times a day for a while, and then this was increased to 0.6ml when her reflux worsened. i cant remember what her weight was then, but she was around 12-16 weeks old.

Thanks for your replies. Can I just ask if you found that it helped? My ds seems to be getting worse every day - when he is awake, he seems to be permanently in discomfort which is awful to watch. His sister was the same but I can't remember how long it took the ranitidine to work with her and she was getting a much larger dose.

I found the ranitidine to be helpful, it worked pretty quickly. Hope your DS feels better soon.

ranitadine is very weight dependent, so as your DS puts on 1 lb or so you need to get the dose adjusted

with my DS we started to see changes within a week or so, and he was also on domperidone

Hi,

One of the prescribing books for NHS Drs dealing with children is the British National Formulary( for children) BNFC. It has all the dosages recommended for drugs on the NHS for children.

You can access it by registering on the site at www.bnfc.org.

The dosage of Ranitidine for a Child 1?6 months is 1 mg/kg 3 times daily; max. 3 mg/kg 3 times daily

Obviously depends on the concentration of the syrup but think most are 75mg in 5 ml or 150mg in 10ml which is obviously the same. So if I get my maths right 0.5ml 3x day = 3mg 3x day so if you have a 3kg baby that would be the minimum dose recommended.
PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK THE ABOVE AS IT IS LATE AND DONT WANT TO CAUSE CONCERN IF WRONG!!!!!

I know this website as I was given the dose for a 1kg baby even tho my DS was 7kg at the time. Funnily didnt work for long.

Best of luck reflux is not a pleasant thing for a LO to have. MY LO is on Omeprazole which seems to have worked well but he is also 9 months and solids have helped in his case.
