Any advice 😊😊
Starting the gym tomorrow for a taster session with my daughter she has been going for a long time and keeps asking me to join as I moan
About my body a lot. Anyway I'm going tomorrow first time ever to step foot in a gym at 36 🙃
Any tips? I don't do any exercise attall really but on my feet at work most days.

Do 10 mins slowly on a bike or treadmill.
Then get some 5kg dumbells, hoik them onto your shoulders and do 3 sets of 10 squats.
Then go to the area with the mats and do 3 lots of 10 crunches.
Turn over onto your tummy and lift your head and shoulders up off the mat ("superman") to work your lower back.
Spend another 5 mins or so stretching in the style of before school netball matches 😁

There you go, first time in the gym done!

Then you can research some short workouts and save them to your phone for next time. Alternate a couple for variety and a full body workout for future visits.

Good on you and good luck.

Don't worry - no one is looking at you

Don't be afraid to ask for help from staff or other gym users. I've never had anyone be other than lovely when I've asked

You want to do some cardio and some strength training. Enough to be a bit out of breath, and to find the last couple of reps hard

Stretch.... really, don't skip it. Before you start, esp your Achilles

Hi, I joined a gym for the first time in my life last week age 37! I felt the same, I was really nervous.

My main goal is general cardio fitness so I do about a km walking on the treadmill at a quite brisk pace and then I do 2/3km on the rowing machine as that is a really good all-over exercise. I have then been having a little go on various other machines (crunch, hip abduction, shoulder ones) just to get a feel for it and a little exercise for each body zone. Everyone in there wears headphones and pays no attention to anyone else.

A lot of the machines sync to either my Apple Watch or a fitness app the gym uses and it’s really quite satisfying logging it all and watching the bar go up. Don’t be afraid, give it a go 😊

I started going last year with my son. Am quite a lot older than you and probably much fatter and less fit. It's great. I'm so much stronger and a better shape. Highlight of my day when I get to go. Feel so much better every time. Lovely that your daughter is supportive.

Suggest have one or two PT sessions with a female PT to get you started.

Have fun!

How was it?

Lou22000 · 18/04/2023 22:31

Hey, it was fantastic really enjoyed myself, I was so anxious going in and thinking everyone will be looking me but I was to busy with my own self getting to no the equipment I didn't really look any anyone else to notice if anyone was looking :-)
I don't feel I've done much I dont think I got myself like out of breathe kind of thing just took it at a steady pace. My daughter does all the weights so I'm not that immediate yet. We also went for s swim and sauna afterwards. I think next time I need to go In with more of a routine as I did stand there a little thinking what to do next.
