A&E or Doctor on Monday

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 15/04/2023 16:52

Had a 360 FDL tummy tuck on 11th March, surgery went well. Lots of fluid build up which was normal, however three weeks later I developed an infection in a small hole I had and ended up in hospital for three days. This is fine now and no fluid coming out of it anymore.

Now I have a soft area, with pain and redness at the front of the scar. With dark brusing?! Underneath.

Do I wait until Monday and go and see the doctor or ring the plastic surgeon who dealt with me while I was in hospital (no idea if they are there) or just go to A&E.

I tried a walk in centre last time and got told off for not going direct to a&e as they couldn't deal with the issue.

Pictures are 1 normal side and 2 of the "bad" side

I have drawn round the redness and will see what it looks like in an hour.

I have seen 6 uk surgeons since I had the surgery, due to the infection and being in hospital. They all say the surgery is fine, it was just an unfortunate build up of fluid and then an infection.

The surgery was done abroad, in a well researched hospital and recommended surgeon.

Don't wait an hour. Sepsis can kill you.

hanisnsj · 15/04/2023 18:10

I'd go get that checked out asap if i were you! It looks infected and looks much worse in the second pic compared to the morning photo

Beseen22 · 15/04/2023 18:13

Hello I work in acute medicine and I'd be very surprised if you weren't admitted for a few days IV antibiotics with that, the area looks pretty cellulitic. If it was me id mark with as permanent marker as you have available and if you are feeling well in yourself without temp/HR above 90/passing urine then contact 111. If its spreading/the wound has opened or if you have any of the above signs head straight to ED and take a bag.

This is now
Pictures above was this morning

Jesus, OP, that looks horrendous. Don't wait an hour, go to A&E now.

Muddydogpawprints · 15/04/2023 18:15

Don't wait for sepsis to set in, just go to A&E

IhearyouClemFandango · 15/04/2023 18:25

Ah you poor thing, that looks really sore

WeeOrcadian · 15/04/2023 18:30

So you've paid privately for the surgery abroad. Cool.

Then when it's going wrong, the NHS are on hand to deal with the shit storm? Huh.

Thanks

Temp is 36.6
Feel fine
No expansion of redness
If I ring my doctor on Monday am, I will get a call back and get to see them same day...I'm very lucky

I think you are missing two letter that are recurring on here: A & E.

Better safe than sorry - get it seen.

Yeah, cause that's the important detail right now. 🙄

Presumably the OP also contributes to the cost of the NHS.

You can get an infection anywhere, as the plastic surgeon in the UK told me.

He said there are some amazing surgeons abroad and that mine had done a fantastic job.

The UK isn't the only place where plastics can be done.

I'm not one to go to A&E all the time, so I will use it if needed.

If you leave that until Monday you might be too late for the treatment to save you.

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 15/04/2023 18:40

I don't want to tie up A&E tonight, so will wait it out probably till Monday morning, unless as others said it gets worse.

I mean I wouldn't want to use any NSH resources, not that I haven't spent all my working life paying in mind you, being 52 now and paid in since 16 🙄

This is not the basis to make your decision on.

That needs seen asap.

ODFOD

So you’ve had a motorbike accident, knowing how dangerous they can be.
So you’ve had a rugby injury, an accident whilst drunk, an obesity/smoking related illness….

Where do you draw the line? Presumably if you were in charge A&E would be empty all the time as those in need aren’t deserving enough 🙄

CaloriesShmalories · 15/04/2023 18:50

OP please go to A&E.

Katrinawaves · 15/04/2023 18:51

Don’t be silly OP

Just because you had your surgery overseas isn’t a good reason to put your life at risk when it didn’t go completely to plan.

Your GP and presumably also the Plastic surgeon you saw here are also part of the NHS so logically it makes no sense not to go to A and E and wait until Monday when you can see them. And the longer you leave this, the more you’re likely to cost the NHS so if all else fails do it to save us money!

Yeah. You had the surgery abroad in a well researched hospital and a recommended surgeon - and SIX UK surgeons since then. So not that great research and you are expecting the NHS to pick up the cost of your choices?

I really hope that this gets sorted, but I have little sympathy. Sorry, but there we go. You chose to do something abroad privately - you should not be expe the NHS to pick up the cost of your choices. Did you not insure against this?

FixTheBone · 15/04/2023 19:00

PurBal · 15/04/2023 17:25

@Needanewnamebeingwatched you said you contacted the plastic surgeon who dealt with you last week, have you contacted the surgeon who performed the surgery 3 weeks ago? It’s the surgeon that performed the surgery who should be taking responsibility for your aftercare, private or otherwise, not A&E. If you can’t get hold of them today then A&E and the surgeon that did the surgery on Monday.

Not necessarily... We don't work 24/7. Repsonsibility is delegated out of normal working hours and during leave etc.

The hospital where that surgeon works will have a plastic surgery department, the department will have someone on-call 24/7, they will see you via ED (quicker if you can get a direct to specialty as a recent discharge, or known patient) and the on-call team will look after you until your care is handed back to your responsible surgeon.

I hope some comments on here haven't put you off getting medical help if needed.

It doesn't matter where you had the surgery done, if it needs medical attention then that is what the NHS is for.

CaloriesShmalories · 15/04/2023 19:02

Some empathy bypasses going on here tonight - OP please don’t let them stop you from being seen - it could be dangerous to leave it.

Ladybug14 · 15/04/2023 19:02

Why do posters ask what they should do, then refuse to do what is almost 100% suggested? Weird

It looks awful, OP

I'd be really worried about sepsis (low temperature not high) or cellulitis

You are crazy to wait until Monday

If you want to miss the Saturday night a and e , go first thing tomorrow morning

LunchBoxPolice · 15/04/2023 19:03

Several posters who say they are HCP’s have advised you to go to a&e. I don’t understand why you’re going to wait until Monday morning and ignore advice?

TokyoSushi · 15/04/2023 19:07

Bloody hell OP, quite frankly, it looks terrible, get yourself to A&E!

So you've paid privately for the surgery abroad. Cool.

Then when it's going wrong, the NHS are on hand to deal with the shit storm? Huh.

People largely go abroad because there are surgeries which enhance their life immeasurably which aren't offered here by our wonderful and perfect NHS. Its also not the case that surgeries abroad are inherently more risky, if you're going down this path quite a few people's illness and injuries are self inflicted unintentionally or purposefully by lifestyle or activity, do we not treat them either?

A&E is for anyone who needs it, such as OP.
