Oooh bugger - just had some blood test results back and my iron level is 8. How bad is that?

Had my DCs with me, and was too distracted to ask more questions. I'm pretty sure it was 11 when I was pregnant 18 months ago.

I'm also very low in folic acid (152).

The cause is almost certainly Crohn's disease (was diagnosed 7 years ago, but have been virtually symptom free other than a possible flare up a few months ago).

Shouldn't I be feeling ill?

Low, I was put on a supplement post baby for my level was 13 (which is not very low)

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 14/02/2008 15:06

i feel like death at 10.6! but my pcv is also low...

you must be a stolwart!

bundle · 14/02/2008 15:07

you'd probably be feeling a lot better if you were more than 8!

avenanap · 14/02/2008 15:07

That's very low, should be above 15.

IdrisTheDragon · 14/02/2008 15:07

When I'd just had DS and a 1500ml PPH, my iron level was 7.5 I think and I felt awful.

CatIsSleepy · 14/02/2008 15:09

that's really low isn't it?I'd have thought you'd be feeling it

mine was 8ish just after I had my dd...standing up for too long or even talking much made me v. out of breath
very tired too though of course there were other reasons for that

mazzystar · 14/02/2008 15:09

take some spa tone [i should have shares]

Twiglett · 14/02/2008 15:11

my iron levels have a tendency to be low .. so an iron count of 8 or 9 would not be exceptional for me .. and I wouldn't feel crap on it ..

suggest spatone (from Boots) or floradix (from health stores)

mazzystar · 14/02/2008 15:11

actually, find out exactly what it is first and then take some spatone

i went down to 8 when pregnant with dd, felt okay though

NorthernLurker · 14/02/2008 15:13

I'm sure you are feeling ill - you've just got used to it and will only notice it when you start feeling much, much better!

AdamRomANTic · 14/02/2008 15:15

Yes - I thought it sounded quite low. I will of course be milking it with DH from now on

I've already got spatone, but have been lazy about taking it. Doc prescribed some hardcore looking pills. I have bad memories of iron tabs, but I'll give them a shot.

My iron levels were 6 the day after I had my Ds by c-section.

My consultant was very shocked to see me up and about and said I should have had a transfusion they were so low,but as I was managing to walk about without fainting he'd be happy for me to have my iron injections done by the practise nurse, when I got home.

(I have a phobia of hopsitals so had already made a 'deal' with him that I would be out of hospital with 24 hours of giving birth or would discharge myself.)

I cannot take Iron Tablets and the injections are evil, but as other have recommended Spatone is excellent and always gets my levels back up.

Sidge · 14/02/2008 15:24

Wow 8 is really low.

We used to transfuse people at 7!

You need some iron really, whether ferrous sulphate tablets or Spatone/Floridix. You will feel lots better when your Hb is up a bit.

sparklyfairypie · 14/02/2008 15:28

my aunts was 3 (she has coeliac)

poor you hope tabs help

AdamRomANTic · 14/02/2008 15:28

friend's daughter had level of 2.5 when she took her into hospital, very pale and lethargic (she had a rare form of anaemia which meant her bone marrow didn't produce any red blood cells) which they said was virtually incompatible with life. she had to have 6-weekly transfusions until she had a bone marrow transplant.
