My 86 year old father has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of his hip. It's causing him quite a bit of pain some days and limiting what he can do. Despite his age he was previously very independent, walked everywhere he needed to go daily, an active gardener etc.
He can still walk around the house but he can't do his morning walks every day anymore.
We are waiting to see an orthopaedic consultant on Monday. I want to know if he would be considered for a hip replacement at his age or not? He has no other health problems and takes no medication. I'm not certain he would want a hip replacement but want to know if he is entitled to be offered one and what are important questions to ask please?
He lives with my mum who is in good health and could help him with his recovery, I'm also not far away and can help them.
Thank you. I'm a health professional but work in mental health so it's obviously quite different.
