Pineapple allergy

gave my dd (6) a slice of fresh pineapple a couple of days ago.

She has had it loads before and was always ok . But a couple of minutes after she had it her lip had a small speck of blood on it and she was scratching her throat and her lips were very slightly swelled.

She could breath fine and was ok in herself apart from the throat itch I did ring NHS direct and they told me to keep an eye on her but she was literally fine after a minute.

So do you think it was a reaction or just a bit of an itchy throat ?

Obviously am going to mention it to DR tomorrow when she has her check up

Not an expert on these things but did grow up in the knowledge that my sister was allergic to pineapple. Seems a strange random thing to be allergic to but there you go, obviously can happen.
So def check with doc and get sent for tests.
p.s. my sister is 43 now and doesn't know if she has grown out of allergy as she is too scared to try!

thanks I just couldn't work out why she had had it so many times before then had a reaction to it this time

I love pineapple but it makes my lips and tongue sort of tingle and swell slightly and makes me sweat, still eat it occasionally though.

Could there have been one of the thorn like things that pineapples have on it? As mcfee said there are random allergies to things you would not think of - my mum is allergic to bananas!!

You need to be careful with this kind of thing, some allergies get worse the more you are in contact with the allergen. I'm allergic to certain kinds of nuts and when I was little I used to get the scratchy throat after eating chocolates with nuts in but the reaction got worse each time I ate nuts until I ended up in hospital with anaphalactic shock after inadvertently eating pine nuts (it was the first time I'd been to an Italian restaurant and had pesto).

I know I have just told her she is not allowed to eat pineapple until we have got to the bottom of it and I will also inform the school too to be on the safe side.

When I told her she said

" Can I still draw pineapples though"
