How is chickenpox passed on?

I'm meant to be going to a school Christmas lunch tomorrow, but have just had a call to tell me that there is an outbreak of chickenpox. I'm not that worried about my kids getting it, although I know it can be nasty,and of course Christmas is not a good time...

I have had chickenpox. So even if I come in to contact with the virus, can I pass it on?

I'm meeting up with someone next week who for various medical reasons is avoiding chickenpox where possible.

Any ideas welcome.

if you've had chickenpox then you will be immune and can't pick up or transmit the virus,if your kids pick it up incubation period is about 2 weeks .People are infectious for a couple of days before the spots appear and remain so until all spots are dried up.some people think you can catch shingles from chicken pox but you can't ( although you can catch chicken pox from shingles!hope this helps!!

also forgot to say is spread through droplets eg; sneezes spit or just breath in some cases is v infectious!!

And kids don't always feel grotty with it either. DS1 and ds2 both had it over the summer and apart from having hundreds of spots, they were perfectly OK. It is usually a lot more nasty if you catch it as an adult.

No, if you've had chickenpox you will be immune and can't pass it on. Best for kids to have it now...though as you say, Christmas isnt the best time. HOrrid as an adult though.

So I can go with a clear conscience then. As I've had it, I won't pass it on because I'm immune. Everyone agree? I need to decide early tomorrow morning. Thanks.
