Given someone else's crown???

So I've never had a crown before so had no idea what to expect. I'd had the temporary one on for a couple weeks and it was great, looked just like my normal tooth. Got the permanent (NHS) one fitted yesterday and it is a monstrosity. It is huge... much bigger than my natural tooth was. It sticks out at the front and back more and it's making me feel self conscious. Surely this isn't right? The temporary one looked better!!

I phoned the dentist this morning and asked if it was meant to look this way and he said it's the NHS lab that makes the crown based on the impressions they sent them. I said so it's meant to look like my tooth did before and he said yes. Well it doesn't... I'm starting to think I've been given someone else's tooth!!

Does anyone else have experience with NHS crowns... are they the same size as your tooth was before?

The lab will have no way of knowing what the tooth looked like before. What they usually do is make the crown so it fits with the surrounding teeth but it can also depend on how the dentist has prepped the tooth

They take aged to settle down and usually feel big. They sometimes need grinding down a bit so go back of necessary but give it a few days first. Mine took 6 weeks before of felt right.

I'm not sure if that is right - I have just had a crown also (admittedly privately) but is is just like my old tooth, a perfect fit. Maybe it's worth seeing if they can take a quick look (although I suppose that might be easier said than done). Maybe there is a dentist somewhere here.....

Thanks for all your replies. I didn’t realise the lab is sent the impression of your tooth once it’s been prepared and not of what it actually looked like before! They have grinded it down a bit but still looks hideous so I’m changing it for a private one!

You can’t have been given someone else’s crown - it wouldn’t fit. They are made to fit the individual prepped tooth. If the NHS crown is porcelain covered metal there is a minimum thickness the material can be so they can look a bit ‘bulky’. The private ones are usually just a ceramic (much stronger but more expensive usually) so can be a bit thinner and less ‘opaque’. Can you attach a photo so we can see…. May be that the tooth was not prepped enough or may be that your expectations were a bit high for the aesthetic result of an NHS crown - hard to tell unless we can see it.

Imdoneattwo · 02/04/2023 11:48

This was it when it was first put in. I’m sure you can tell which one it is 🤣 my tooth used to look like the molar opposite. I do think my expectations were a bit high but other people I’ve seen with NHS crowns have at least “fitted” within their teeth. This just looks totally out of place! Excuse the shot right up my nose 🙈

It looks too big.

Theunamedcat · 02/04/2023 11:58

You've been given some one else's tooth

I had a couple of crowns impressions were taken before and after prep work was done and it fitted just fine

Schmutter · 02/04/2023 11:58

It looks most incongruous. I’ve recently had one, it looks like the tooth it replaced, but better.

You definitely need to go back.

Choppies · 02/04/2023 12:46

Looks like it is a bit bulky….
May be the tooth wasn’t prepped enough.
Due to NHS dentistry being so poorly
funded practices and labs (that make the crowns) are closing left and right and the quality of the NHS lab work is totally slipping.
TBH - if it’s functional I doubt the NHS dentist would agree to re-do it FoC - you might have to go private

AbsoluteYawns · 02/04/2023 12:48

I see what you mean OP that looks massive and will feel much bigger in your mouth.
Definitely go back.

I thought this thread was going to be about a mix up at the coronation.

Imdoneattwo · 02/04/2023 12:58

🤣

Yeah I did go back and the dentist said just that, that they’ve got more and more people complaining as the NHS work isn’t what it used to be. They’re giving me what I’ve paid for the NHS crown against a private one so I’m happy with that!

Sorry,.but that looks, bloody ridiculous. If it's not someone else's, the person making them should be retrained as they are very crap at their job........

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/04/2023 13:48

What the hell? That looks like a play dough pretend crown!

mushroom3 · 03/04/2023 11:51

colour also looks wrong
