Magnesium - can someone explain?

I started taking magnesium tablets recently as am peri menopausal and it is meant to help with bones, muscles and sleep.

I bought the Vitabiotics ultra Magnesium, but after a bit more research found that they are made from magnesium hydroxide (and talc!) which is the same type as milk of magnesia and used to help with constipation, and not recommended or well absorbed as a supplement. And yes taking the two tablets a day did affect my, erm, stools.

I have now purchased much more expensive, Solgar Magnesium Citrate (apparently much better as a supplement) but reading again I find that you shouldn't actually take a single type of magnesium and supplements should be a mix.

Can anyone who understands this stuff advise please? I am baffled as to what I should be taking.

(I also take a vit B complex and Vit D)

I understood it’s ok to take alongside Vitamin D. That’s what I do, I take magnesium to help with mild constipation, much better than taking laxatives. It does help with sleep, but I can’t say it helped me through my menopause.
