Is there a weird bug going round with persistent fever?

Hi all,

DH has had for the last 3 weeks a persistent low grade fever with body aches, heaviness and tiredness. Weirdly no sore throats, coughs, sneezing etc. Covid test negative.

Blood tests showed very low Vitamin D at 21 which I know can cause body aches but it’s the fever I’m worried about. He also has high ESR at 38. Doc said she could hear some slight crackling in his chest so prescribed antibiotics.

I’m worried because this fever has been constant every day for 3 weeks and wakes him up at the same time every night. He gets some relief with regular paracetamol and ibuprofen.
I have health anxiety and recently experienced a scare myself.

Would appreciate any thoughts.

Having a low grade fever for 3 weeks sounds very alarming to me.
is the fever just that one time at night or is it throughout the day too?

Maruni · 20/03/2023 23:46

Hi @Mumma2Ro he has fevers throughout the day too but he says the one that strikes in the middle of the night is worse. I’m not sure what to do next.

Have you travelled somewhere abroad that might have (for example) dengue or malaria ?

TomatoesAndPeaches · 21/03/2023 00:11

Di he tell the GP that he has been having temperatures every day for 3 weeks?

Hopefully with the antibiotics he will get better but if you are worried or the fevers continue contact the GP again

I don't suppose it could be that his duvet or bedding is too hot for the changing season, or synthetic, and making him wake up hot?

Health anxiety can make you jump to sickness as an explanation when it could be something else...

Maruni · 21/03/2023 14:48

@Avarua2 Haven’t been abroad since last year and you’ve given me an idea about the bedding as we have quite a high tog duvet. I will swap it for something lighter tonight. Thank you.

@TomatoesAndPeaches I went with him to his appointment as he can sometimes downplay things and told the GP he has been having a daily low grade fever she seemed to think it could be something viral but prescribed antibiotics too due to sounds coming from his chest. It’s the high ESR level too that’s concerning me. Not sure if there’s a connection with that and Vitamin D?

Hi OP how is he now?

Maruni · 11/04/2023 09:58

@insomniac1 Hi. He’s a lot better now thank God. He still has some intermittent body pains particularly in the legs and knees. GP wants to repeat the ESR blood test in a few months because normal range for males is 2-10 and his was 38.

Send him back to the GP for further investigations. Three week fever isn't right. I

MyPenIsHuge · 11/04/2023 10:01

It could be an autoimmune disease that is undiagnosed. Something like rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis. Can cause low grade fever and joint pain for weeks on end. I have one of them and low D is also a symptom. Not to alarm you but yes with the above normal ESR something like that is possible.

Maruni · 11/04/2023 10:06

Thank you everyone. He’s been prescribed 6 week high dose of Vitamin D (50,000) and I think he’s got 2 weeks left of that. Docs also want to keep an eye on the ESR levels so he has a repeat blood test soon.
