Recall after unclear mammogram

Had first mammogram about three weeks ago, have had a letter this morning asking me to reattend for further tests as my recent x-rays are "unclear". Does also say that a "substantial" number of women are recalled.

Nothing to worry about, right? Except I am very worried.

Thanks. She did say it was simply due to dense tissue so I'll try and remember that. I mean, they would have to tell me if there was something suspicious, right? Google seems to suggest that diagnostic mammograms are only used if cancer is suspected.

Step away from Dr. Google! The important thing is that your doctor is telling you that they require further imaging because of the dense tissue. And a diagnostic mammogram is definitely not only used because of suspicion of cancer.

Basically what they are seeing is like a wall of white. If there's a slight shadow they really can't make out what (if anything) it is. The diagnostic mammogram will try to get a different angle. The ultrasound can offer more clarity.

After I had the diagnostic mammogram/ultrasound/MRI a tiny benign cyst was found. It was just that getting a clear enough picture to tell that it was only a cyst was quite an ordeal due to the dense tissue.

I know how anxiety provoking this all is; I was a complete wreck while going thru the process. My best advice is to stop scouring the internet for reassurance, you're just fueling your anxiety. See if you can get your name on a cancellation list for an earlier appointment so you don't have to wait (and worry!) for so long.

Knitting Needles. How did you get on? Hope all went well.

Not the OP but just to update on my situation in case anyone searches and finds this thread like I did. The diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound showed that it was almost certainly a cyst and a benign finding. They recommended I go back in 6 months for another mammogram just to be sure.
