Worried sick...is it actually possible that I could be going through the menopause at 27??

There is no family history of it. I have been quite ill with a cough and virus but since last week I've had the following symptoms:

hot flashes, especially at night. I wake up and the sheets are drenched

itching & rash

feeling sick

I have googled it (stupidly) and it seems to bring up loads of stuff about early menopause

My GP is going to test for thyroid problems. Anyone have any advice?

There was a huge thread on this recently. Will look and see if I can find.

Pinkchampagne · 11/02/2008 17:42

Could well be related to the virus you have had. When I had flu a few years back, I had terrible night sweats & developed a strange itchy rash, which the doctor couldn't really explain, but I think it was a symptom of me being so run down with the illness.

Pinkchampagne · 11/02/2008 17:43

It was the rash the doctor couldn't explain, not the night sweats btw. Night sweats are common when you are unwell.

a look here www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=9&threadid=447176#9069432

It was an interesting thread.

kindersurprise · 11/02/2008 17:46

oops, I can do links normally

electra · 11/02/2008 17:48

Thanks for replies. My periods have been a bit irregular too but I recently had a coil fitted and the doctor said that could be the cause but I didn't think that sounded right...Ok, off to read thread.

Common for periods to be irregular or even stop totally when you have a coil fitted. Try not to worry too much. All the symptoms you describe sound like they could be linked to you being unwell.

electra · 12/02/2008 12:45

Well today I am covered in a very itchy rash - it is even on my face and my ears get very hot and itchy. It looks slightly puffed up. Still getting the sweats at night...

I had a friend who reacted quite badly to having a Mirena coil fitted - some similar symptoms but with bad headaches as well. Ended up having it removed. Doctors didnt think it was connected they insisted it was just a coincidence but about 3 weeks after it was removed she was fine.

electra · 12/02/2008 14:16

Thanks maisykins. Mine is not a Mirena - it's just one of the copper ones I think.

You might be allergic to the copper itself. This apparently is not a very common allergy, but it does exist. I also just googled this and found some stuff on high copper levels depleting other metals, such as zinc and magnesium, which could make you prone to infections, and also make your menstruations irregular.

electra · 13/02/2008 23:25

Thanks Honneybunny - that hadn't even occured to me, how interesting. I am having the blood test tomorrow anyway...

I get this and joined in on one of those threads I went to the dotor who thinks I have an allergic reaction as well not to the coil but to something I have eaten or touched that previously I wasnt allergi too

My rash stays puffy but also hurts a bit when the original rash is gone

shabster · 13/02/2008 23:33

I have had the blood test to confirm the menopause and it proved that I am, indeed, at that special time of my life. Mind you, I am 51!! but had my last DS when I was almost 41.

It is like no other 'condition'!! Quite similar to being a teenager. I can be very happy and then want to rip someones head off. I recently went 11 months without a period and then started last week!

Awful feelings of 'what have I done with my life' etc

I think the other Mumsnetters are probably right when they talk about the coil.
