Ears blocked, infection?

I've just got over Covid but earlier this week I lost the better of my hearing in my right ear only, slight ear ache but nothing major - spoke to a doc yesterday on phone who said likely just a build up of wax and to use ear drops for two weeks if doesn't go, speak to GP.
It's now gone to both ears, both feel underwater and I have the worst headache along with ear ache/pain but not bad pain, like a 4/5.
Could Covid have caused this? Im worried it's an infection as a doctor hasn't actually looked in my ears just went by my symptoms over the phone

My mum had this a few weeks ago and it was fluid in her ears. One day, about a week and a half later, she leaned down and thought taps were running but it was actually water in her ears. It did clear up on its own but took a little while.
maybe give it another day and if no improvement request a face to face to get them checked? I’m lucky as our gp will always give us a face to face with an ear complaint x

It sounds similar to what my husband had following a virus. It wasn’t wax, it was blocked eustachian tubes. It took weeks to clear up (by itself). He went almost completely deaf at one point.

FairIce · 12/03/2023 14:32

It probably is due to covid but even if it was just wax they wouldn't attempt to clear it if there was any hint it may be infected.
I have to have my ears microsuctioned regularly due to hearing aids / excess wax and they won't do it if you have any infection.

My ds had an ear infection recently, following a cold. The local nurse agreed to see him and he had a course of antibiotic ear spray. Nurse said ear infection is common if your immune system has been weakened eg by a cold or Covid.

My dh has caught it too and it is quite unpleasant, he hasn’t had much sleep the past 3 nights but no chance of a GP appointment round my area, he has had it since Weds and the Gp said he shouldn’t phone in for an appointment until next Thursday!

Hope you don’t suffer too much.

Thanks, I just saw a out of hours doctor as the pain was a lot, Eustachian tube dysfunction, she said there's no infection but can be very painful so prescribed a nasal spray to help ease the symptoms

That's what doc just said I have, she said common after covid

I have had a blocked right ear with a light pressure/pain for 6 months following covid- nothing seems to clear it, I'm going to see if the micro suction thing helps. It hasnt actually caused a hearing issue- more an annoying 'pressure' feeling

Oh my gosh 6 months :( that must suck! Mine literally hurts so bad, but doctor reassured me it looked completely normal upon exam and definitely a post Covid thing

@anonxc I've got long covid and it's actually the least painful and annoying of my symptoms

@anonxc thank you- hope yours gets sorted- it isn't nice -

Softsoftsleep · 12/03/2023 20:06

My daughter has this after a cold. The Dr told me to use saline solution nasal spray on her every day.

sunshinerainstorm · 13/03/2023 00:20

Lose my hearing after a cold every single-time due
To Eustachian tube blockage it's debilitating. Have to steam over a bowl of hot water and essential oils a few times and blow and my ears pop. Trust me. It works!!!!!

Thank you, I haven't tried steaming yet, is it also normal to feel like an odd burning sensation in the ears? It feels so strange

Starting to worry this is an infection, my other ear has popped now and I can hear normally from it but the right ear still hasn't, on and off pain and burning sensation coming from the ear...I'm a bit worried it is infected

Hi OP my dh managed to get an online GP appointment at 6.15am today via his private healthcare insurance (yes!! 6.15am I think the Dr is offshore). Anyway this Doctor also told my DH there is no infection and the pain and deafness will just go away.

i am a bit mystified how doctors can diagnose without looking in someone’s ear — it’s weird isn’t it? But anyway I thought you might be interested my DH doesn’t apparently have the same infection as my son (bit of a weird coincidence). Seems like the diagnosis is not always too consistent…

That is strange, but good thing! - I hope it's not an infection, it's so hot and sore and dr google is not helping 😭

So it turns out I do have an infection. They've prescribed ear spray for my right ear to see if it helps

anonxc · 18/03/2023 19:29

And it's got worse, I have a perforated ear drum, fever which I never had before, facial pain and vomiting. They've now decided to put me on a course of oral anti biotics :) I'm so upset with the doctors I've been like this for two weeks
