Finger joint pain

Not really sure if I have an old injury (not that I can remember...) that is now playing up, or perhaps something else has developed? Not going to bother GP with it as I imagine they would shrug, but wanted to see if anyone else gets similar and can shed some light.

Basically over the last couple of years I have noticed that the top joint of my right index finger bloody hurts whenever I press it or knock the joint. I am not talking a hard knock, more like how you might bump your hand when generally doing a busy task e.g. gardening.
The area affected is particularly on the outer edge of the joint. The joint also painfully aches whenever my hands get cold e.g. swimming in cool water or just outside in cool weather etc. Knocking it when it is cold is doubly worse and not unlike stubbing a toe.

Googling tells me it is most likely arthritis or perhaps some sort of raynaud's. Just find it a bit odd it is only in this one finger joint...but I guess that could be likely?

Very old injury that is now arthritic seems likely?

I have been slowly developing arthritis in my fingers during these past 12 years or so - I'm now in my 60's. They all followed the same pattern of a buring, itching, painful sensation at the side of the joints. Then I would experience a kind of popping in the joints where they would then settle down and feel quite ok unless given a hard knock.

It is now in the fingers of both hands, with both starting with the small fingers and working inwards, and is presently at the middle. Like yourself op, I first noticed it whenever my hands were cold.

So I now wear compression gloves which are also warming, and carry out gentle stretching exercises of the fingers and hands, which helps me to carry on as normal.

As PPs, or....
How's your shoulder? I had lots of finger pain last year, but it was where my shoulder was damaged/out of alignment.
Although that wasn't just one finger joint.

Compression gloves are great. Under a tenner on Amazon.

Could be a vitamin d deficiency

I absolutely recommend the compression gloves too, I have terrible hands, probably some arthritis plus some repetitive strain/tendon issues, I wear the gloves for bed every night. I've also just started using hemp cream which does seem to give some immediate relief

I have joint pain in my fingers and I found giving up bread and wheaty products (so pasta, cake, pizza etc) has helped. I dont know that I have any allergy or anything, and it may even be coincidence but each time Ive cut it out it alleviates this and also my swollen ankles.

I fell over in my garden several months ago and squished my right middle finger as I fell. Not broken but i think i hurt something. my knees have nearly healed but my finger is painful, similar to yours. I think its like this forever. In a couple of years ill forget the injury, but still have the pain, so maybe you had a minor injury you've forgotten?

Thanks everyone. I will look into the compression gloves, will be useful to use them in the winter time when it seems worse.

No shoulder pain thankfully. Do occasionally get a painful right hip when walking a long distance, but that predates the finger troubles and almost zero chance of a link there. I am only in my 30s...so I am sure the next few decades will be fun. 😅 Both myself and dsis have somewhat hypermobile joints (could easily do the splits etc when younger), so possibly just prone to this kind of stuff. Maybe I should look into some supplements sooner rather than later.

Interesting about the link to wheat. I haven't noticed a link for myself, but I am sure if you have a slight allergy the inflammatory response could cause joint issues.

Same for me. I assume the shoulder issue affects the nerves in my hands/fingers.

Yes mine felt jammed on.
Still get occasionally despite lots of massage and odd cracks by a physio.
GP missed it was the shoulder and sent me for hand x-rays and offered hand physio!
