Migraines with weakness in left arm

I had a migraine on Thursday. Fairly typical for me I get them a couple of times a year. I get aura, then feel thick headed with a headache but not a bad one. It takes me a couple of days to feel normal and I feel very tired for the day before.

This morning I had a stressful event - car got stuck in mud! Anyway when I got home as I was putting the kettle on my left arm went very weak and tingly. I felt awful so went to lay down. I feel a bit better now but have a migraine type headache. Definitely no chest pain or pain in arm. Blood pressure is normal (i have a machine). Is this a symptom of migraine?

I've never experienced weakness with migraines. I did have a small stroke years ago and would suggest you seek medical advice just to be on the safe side. Wishing you well.

Onebigmistake · 07/03/2023 14:21

I have this. They're called hemiplegic migraines but need to be diagnosed by GP or neurologist to rule out strokes x

NewUserName2023 · 07/03/2023 14:34

Could be a small stroke. Do call your GP

LizzieSiddal · 07/03/2023 14:34

Please call your GP.

greenacrylicpaint · 07/03/2023 14:35

could be a stroke.
see a dr immediately.

Woolandwonder · 07/03/2023 14:36

I have a lot of weakness and numbness with my migraines, sometimes only those symptoms without pain, or the sensation will last for days after. It's incredibly annoying.

userlotsanumbers · 07/03/2023 14:36

I have these, yes, my left side doesn't work properly when I have migraines. Really annoying.

shattered25 · 07/03/2023 14:41

I have Hemiplegic migraines which is classed as a rare disorder. Had them since I was a child, it's a mutated gene that runs in my family. If your mum or dad gets them there is a 50% chance the gene is passed on. It has stroke like symptoms, so half my body goes paralysed and with muscle weakness, then I lose the ability to talk and form sentences and then lose my vision... then starts the vomiting 😭😭😭 hate them. Not sure if yours could be a form of this??

AnnaMagnani · 07/03/2023 14:49

It sounds typical of hemiplegic migraine.

I've never had this but I have lost speech and vision, thankfully these aren't my usual migraines.

changer7654 · 07/03/2023 14:54

Go to A&E to rule out stroke. Go now.

onlyoneoftheregimentinstep · 07/03/2023 14:56

Worth checking out with A&E but my DS had these symptoms with migraines for many years, so it may well be nothing to worry about.

Xhee · 07/03/2023 14:58

You need to contact a Dr. I have this when I get migraines but this seems to be a new symptom for you? So you need to get it checked out, it might be migraine related it might not be.

Thank you. I will contact them tomorrow.

It feels very much like my normal migraine- fuzzy head, not much headache - but the arm thing is new. I feel worse than I normally do tbh.

It isn't a stroke. I can move arms, face and speech are fine and I'm now having classic migraine symptoms. But I will ask gp tomorrow. I don't want to drive so not going to call an ambulance for a and e.

I expect they'll take me off my HRT 😪

OP posts:
AnnaMagnani · 07/03/2023 15:24

What HRT are you on? The British Menopause Society guidance is bothered about aura, but not other symptoms.

Even with aura you can have HRT but it has to be the right sort - patches or gel.

mickeysmug · 07/03/2023 15:24

Yes I have those. Combined with altered speech. I know what I am trying to say but it comes out wrong. Best to see your gp.

urrrgh46 · 07/03/2023 15:31

Given you're on HRT I'm guessing you're over 40. You REALLY should go to A&E and get checked over. Tingling and weakness in your left arm should not be dismissed as just part of your migraine.

Thanks, I'm on oestrogel and utrogestan. So that sounds OK.

I am not going to ring an ambulance, or drive. Dh is away. The symptoms have gone now apart from the headache.

Please do get checked out, I have had this twice now and been diagnosed with hemiplegic migraines, but have been warned I must never assume it is a migraine. The consultant wrote on my discharge notes “must be safety netted at A and E for further episodes” they take it very seriously.
