Tailbone pain really bad.

Out of sudden I developed this very strange pain at the end of my spine.
It gets worse anytime I stand up after sitting down, the pain is so strong it makes me literally cry, like a shooting pain for few seconds.
Last week on Tuesday I had a strange episode where I suddenly had a extremely neck pain, with nausea a sweating, I actually thought I had a heart attack, but paramedic who I have seen dismissed it.
The whole week my neck, shoulders hurt very much and in last few days my tailbone started hurt.
I can’t imagine going back to dr, as they will think I make these up.
Also I don’t know would cause my bottocks hurt so much..

Have you had an accident or injury recently that could’ve caused it?

Does the pain stay at the base of your spine/in your buttocks, or does it go further down in to your legs?

Bluecatseverywheree · 07/03/2023 11:02

@TuneInThisTimeNextWeek no accidents or anything in regards to it.
It doesn’t go down my legs,it’s only around the bum area.

Is it one of those cysts, usually an ingrown hair in the little dimple above your bum, cant remember what its called

Bluecatseverywheree · 07/03/2023 11:07

I can’t any infection or anything, this feel inside, no outside.
All I can think I must had pull some muscle or a pinched some nerve when I cough, as sometimes I cough very hard ( get cough- neck headaches) as of allergies and when I try to cough out mucus I cough hard..

Also I’m very active, walk about 8 miles per day, also not overweight so I can’t workout what could be causing it..
Its so sore especially after I stand up from sitting down..

Those cysts are inside though, they're not always a lump on the outside, its a cyst that grows inside, usually with hair in it and they need to be removed usually.

StickyFloor · 07/03/2023 11:18

OMG I have the same thing!

Came on suddenly one day for no reason whatsoever.

Every time I stand up I have to gear up to it because the pain is excruciating for a few seconds.

It started about 8 weeks ago. I contacted GP who made me go to A&E to check for spinal compression which is rare but serious. 7 hours later they said there was no spinal compression and just sent me home with anti inflammatories and strong painkillers.

Now I'm waiting to see GP again

Switchwitch · 07/03/2023 11:19

Do you wfh? I get very bad tailbone pain because I'm sat in a dodgy position all day

Bluecatseverywheree · 07/03/2023 11:23

@Switchwitch i don’t wfh but I do spent a lot of time on the sofa at the evening reading etc..

Bluecatseverywheree · 07/03/2023 11:24

@StickyFloor did you had any other symptoms?

OP posts:
StickyFloor · 07/03/2023 11:27

No other symptoms at all, it's completely bizarre.

TBH I'm v overweight and quite inactive. I wfh and sit for long periods so I suppose back and joint pain is inevitable.

But this was overnight and so specific.

I tried one of those special cushions but it made no difference to me. As you are slimmer it might be worth a go to take the pressure off when you are seated?

I just got up now to answer the door and had tears in my eyes ffs but now I'm up there is no pain at all!

Bluecatseverywheree · 08/03/2023 08:35

i do sit on the sofa at the evenings, reading, with my legs pulled up on sofa, maybe this contributed.
I noticed painkillers like ibuprofen works but wears off in hrs..
I do suffer for many years from sore neck spine, occasionally I get very sore neck from sleeping position, I had something like this last week so I wonder if it’s connected, I read that neck spine and the tailbone are somehow connected.
I will see how I get on , give it a few day ..

Coccydenia is horrible, I had it for a few months. The only thing you can do is use special cushions, lie or sit on your side. Anything to avoid direct pressure on your coccyx until it hopefully settles down.

If it doesn't go to your gp, if it persists for months they can do local steroid injection which fixed it in my case.

Bluecatseverywheree · 09/03/2023 10:47

update.
It’s just getting worse.
in the morning when getting up, it hurt so much that I couldn’t get up, I had to roll out slowly on side to slide from the bed.
The pain is sort of in the middle above my bum crack, shooting around, when I press the skin around, I can feel the bones and it hurts.
Also it makes me feel it causes some pressure in my bum like to go for poo but this could be as I read too much into now, also bending down hurts.
And when I am sitting down and stand up, I get this shooting pain within 10 seconds in there. It seriously brings tears into my eyes.

It sounds like it could be a pilonidal sinus cyst. They are also apparently incredibly painful and often require surgery to remove

isthismylifenow · 09/03/2023 10:56

I have this OP. I fell onto my coccyx many years ago, and it just flares up every now and then. I even went as far as having an x-ray but it showed nothing. Dr gives me anti inflammatory meds when it's really bad.

Are you quite slim? I ask this as I am and I have knocked the bone having a bath before, crazy I know. Then it seemed to flare up again so I took the anti inflams again.

It does hurt a bit if I have laid on the couch too long, and I move a lot in bed. And I can't sit for too long, like in the movies etc I will battle to stand properly after. I have a donut cushion for my office chair, this helps a lot.

I think it's gp time though if the pain is this bad. Maybe request an x-ray/scan f they didn't do one already. (I was referred for an MRI as the x-ray showed nothing, but our healthcare isn't free here and an MRI is hugely expensive. So I actually still don't know the cause ).

Rainallnight · 09/03/2023 11:02

Poor you, op. I’ve had coccyx pain and it’s awful. Have you lost any weight lately? I was told that it can flare up if there’s just a bit less cushioning on it.

This doesn’t help you, but apparently evolutionarily, the tailbone is on the way out. We don’t use them any more, and they’re getting less flexible and more painful.

For now, get yourself a coccyx cushion (Google, there are millions) and use it. Big big help.

Maybe also check in with the GP

Bluecatseverywheree · 09/03/2023 11:10

@isthismylifenow thankyou, I’m quite slim, walking daily 7-8 miles so very active.
This just all started about a week ago with very sore neck, shoulders, it moved down to my spine and now it’s concentrated around my buttocks.
I can’t see any infected or red place like the cyst mentioned above. I looked it up on Google and it’s says under skin abscess, I don’t think it’s that, this more the bones hurt.
I will have to contact Gp next week if it doesn’t improve this weekend..
Its the getting up from the chair, the pain which arrives in seconds makes me literally cry and clutch my bum!
My DH couldn’t believe what I’m doing when he came home from work yesterday , I was in the kitchen holding my bum with tears in my eyes.. it lasts only few seconds but it’s really bad…

'the getting up from the chair, the pain which arrives in seconds makes me literally cry and clutch my bum!'

Don't sit, you have to stand or lie on your side or perch on one bum cheek until it settles. As I said earlier get a cushion, specially cut out or U shaped ones ro avoid any contact with the coccyx area.

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 09/03/2023 11:17

Go to the doctors op.

WooWooWinnie · 09/03/2023 11:17

Can you afford to go and see a physio?

Rhondaa · 09/03/2023 11:20

I mean obviously go to the Drs but in the meantime manage it as much as possible by avoiding direct sitting pressure.

Garman · 09/03/2023 11:26

Have you been to an osteopath?

Teawaster · 09/03/2023 11:33

I had really bad pain at the base of my back last year. I was ok walking and running but like you , I had to roll over to get up out of bed and it was really painful to get up from sitting down also.
An osteopath was recommended and I was very doubtful. However he said my sacroiliac joints were displaced and was able to pop them back in , in about 2 minutes. Everything was a bit sensitive for a couple of days but that was the end of the pain.

Bluecatseverywheree · 09/03/2023 13:46

Thanks ladies.
sadly I can’t afford to pay for private.
I will see if I get better over the weekend and then will see GP if possible.
