Root canal after effects

I had a root canal on Wednesday morning on an upper pre-molar, and am still in huge amounts of pain. I wondered if anyone could advise how long it took for theirs to settle? I'm usually pretty hardy with pain, but this has had me taking more painkillers than my c-section!

Have got pain all around the area (which I expected) but also across my cheek, up the side of my nose, under my eye and my jaw. It almost feels like really solidly blocked sinuses. No congestion or anything though.

Am taking painkillers every two hours, adult bonjela and sitting with either a bloody hot water bottle or ice pack on my face to get any form of relief and frankly it's driving me mad!

Is this normal?? Do I just have to suck it up and be miserable for a bit longer?

I would contact your dentist for advice just in case it could be an infection. I've had root canals (although on front teeth) and didn't have any pain in the days afterwards, so I'm not sure this is normal.

GulfCoastBeachGirl · 05/03/2023 01:14

No, I don't think this is normal. I've had a root canal on a molar and while the area was sore for about 24 hours it settled down quickly. Definitely get in touch with your dentist.

Sorry, tooth pain is just the worst.😪

MeAndTequila · 05/03/2023 01:19

I had one a few years ago and my dentist said I might need painkillers for a few days, but it was fine, just a bit achey for a day or so. Definitely not the amount of pain you’re describing.

I’m not sure how normal what you’re describing it, I would contact your dentist and ask just in case there’s infection or something going on. It might just be inflammation due to the procedure but definitely worth checking.

Feel better soon. 💐

Thank you all, that's really helpful to know - you always second guess yourself don't you, I never want to be a pain ringing back and checking!

Am wide awake with it at the moment, I think I'll have to give the OOO team a call tomorrow as this is really something else 😫

Not normal in my experience. You poor thing! 💐

cantgetabus · 05/03/2023 03:01

I really feel for you. Same situation for me last week. It was an infection and I needed strong antibiotics. Hope you manage to sleep.

Not normal in my experience either. Excruciating pain before hand if an abscess but usually immense relief after the root canal surgery!

RobinHumphries · 05/03/2023 08:34

It’s a phoenix abscess

I had continuous pain after a root canal and it was an infection. You definitely need to see a dentist, what you are describing isn't normal levels of pain. Sending many sympathies, the pain was horrendous

elliesmummy19 · 05/03/2023 08:42

This doesn’t sound normal. I’ve had one after getting an abscess. Was in horrendous pain before the root canal but the root canal got rid of the pain pretty much instantly and completely (I only felt a bit tender, sore from the injections). I felt huge relief from the pain I’d been in.

Definitely worth a call to out of hours today. Hope you managed to get some sleep!

Thought I'd update with the result in case anyone searches for similar- it's bizarre!

Apparently some of the cleaning fluid used to flush out the root leaked through to my sinuses, essentially bleaching them.

Got a course of antibiotics, and have been advised to do lots of steam inhalation and wait it out... apparently it happens occasionally and there's not much they can do.

Balance is a bit out of whack, and bending over is a real challenge so hoping it rights itself soon. Have a 10 month old so it's not making for a fun ride!

At least my sinuses are clean as a pin though 😂

Glad you went back and got it checked. Hopefully with the antibiotics and steaming you’ll be feeling much better soon.

And who knows, with your new, improved bleached and super clean sinuses, you may have a superhero level of smell or something... 😂

HeyBearILoveYou · 06/03/2023 17:19

@MeAndTequila not sure I'd want superhuman smell with the baby around - weaning nappies are no joke! 😂
