DD was dx on thurs with impetigo then developed a nasty chesty cough/cold on top of it all! Have been on AB since friday trying to get all 5ml down her but struggling now only getting 3-4 as they taste disgusing..
anyway the rash is spreading i would say a new spot a day, i know she is ill anyway so maybe this is why but i read the AB should stop spreading within 48 hours, she is in a bad way and i am concerned - some of the spots are in her mouth now- please help

Manuka honey is good, too. I use it for all skin infections.

Is the AB fluoxecillin? that's what we were given with both DD and DS, it did nothing, maybe kept it at bay slightly but that's it.

With DS we saw different docs all the time, as it was over xmas/new year so was whoever was on call, but with dd we went to see our GP the first time, he said he HAS to treat it with AB's as impetigo first because it's the most likey infection, but as DS had already ahd two lots of the fluoxecillin I pushed and said I wanted a skin scraping done.

GP said to go back in three days, apparently if it was impetigo it would have been getting better by then, three days later, it was still spreading, not weeping so much, but not getting better, we went back he sent us to a dermatologist that day (be worth looking into when skin clinics are held in your area and asking for a referral), got to the skin clinic and the dermatologist got out a woods light (Ask them to look at it under that to see if it's fungal if you're worried, if it's bacterial the right medicene will work, if it;s fungal you need diff medicene). Ask for a skin scraping too.

How old is DD?

VictorianSqualor · 14/02/2008 13:53

Oh and it's def fungal what DD has, I got confirmation from her skin scraping yesterday.

CrushWithEyeliner · 14/02/2008 14:06

she is 14m - thanks so much VS that is so helpful

yes fluoxe first now something else which eactly like you say has stopped the weeping but that's it. I am going to the Docs at 4 today and will demand to see a dermo.

Good luck.
Say youve looked into it and arent convinced it's bacterial, so want to see a specialist, incase its fungal.
Do you have any animals? cats?dogs?
Apparently my tow got theirs from the cat who caught ti from cows across the road!

CrushWithEyeliner · 14/02/2008 14:21

No pets.
To be honest she has such ongoing skin issues anyway I am surprised they have not put me in touch sooner - whay do I feel like I have to fight all the time for my LO? They alway comment on how anxious I am and it makes me want to scream!
sorry

I hope you've got somewhere with the docs this time round.

TBH, when I took DS I got the brush off pretty much and I was convinced it wasnt impetigo (not saying it's the same here though)when I noticed DD's it was sunday afternoon so I took her to the out of hours, the doc refused to see her for a second even though the head nurse was talking to us in the next room.

The nurse got quite peed off and told us to go to our GP's in the morning and ask for a skin scraping because it looked fungal etc etc, but my GP (who I have to add is wonderful) wouldn't even entertain the idea of a skin scraping at first, and when he suggested the AB's I almost laughed, taking DS's cap off his head and saying 'the same antib's that didn't work on him you mean?', I cant allow my 7yr old daughter to lose her hair because you want to test her on different AB's like the other docs did with DS.

Thankfully when I went back a couple of days later and saw the on-call doc she got my GP to have another look, he took photos there and then and emailed them to the dermatologist who was happy to see us practically straight away.

I'm sure they thought I was just an hysterical eejit that was questioning their diagnosis, but I'd prefer them to think that and have it sorted, which it almost is.
