Last week I got toothache and called up my dentist they had me straight in took an x ray said I had some decay and done a filling. When the numbness wore off I was in agony I mean like real bad worse than child birth kinda pain!! I didn’t even know where this pain was coming from I thought they must have done the wrong tooth! I couldn’t get seen for 24 hours. I spent 24 in agony trying a range of pain killers and nothing helping me much. I went back the dentist said she believes she’s damaged the nerve during my filling and either we can do root canal “should fix it” or remove it, “will fix it” I didn’t want to chance going home after a root canal and being in sever child birth pain all night and day again so I said out with it! It’s on the bottom near the back nobody will know so I’m not bothered as I would have tried to save it had it been where it could be seen since I have straight teeth. So anwyays she whips it out I take it home in a bag to show off to everyone look what had me in agony worse than giving birth the size of the stupid thing. Next morning I woke up, throat was so swollen I was talking as if my mouth was full, my throat hurt to bad I believed I had tonsillitis, it was the weekend so I tried soothers more pain killers I couldn’t swallow much so I tried liquid paracetamol and nurofen, tbey kinda helped for an hour or so. Monday comes my throat hurts but isn’t swollen anymore, I assumed iv had virus it’s going now. Tuesday comes my mouth keeps hurting under my tongue and like pulsating, I look in the mirror inside the hole is like a white thing I google says that’s good it’s meant to happen, but this pain is now just woken me up my whole side of my face hurts and under my tongue it hurts to touch the area of where my tooth once lived with my tongue it hurts to move my tongue certain ways it hurts to touch the side of my jaw bone with my fingers. So I’m wondering what ever is going on here it’s 5am and I’m having more pain killers which are making me feel sick I hate taking tablets all I have is naproxen and paracetamol. What could this be? I will call the dentist when they open at 8:30 who are almost certainly sick of the sight of me by now saying of your didn’t fix my problem but I just don’t feel good

That sounds terrible, dental pain is the worst. I would wonder if you have a dry socket but your symptoms before sound a little odd though (I’m not a dentist, just a dental issue co-sufferer!). Aside from possibly dry socket I wonder if you might have got an infection that needs antibiotics. I would definitely try to see someone today. Best of luck.

Had dry socket and felt I was being a baby, was very painful and ordinary pain relief doesn't seem to do anything.

As pp said I would be worried about infection given the pain in other areas.

I do know a few people who have had bad dental experiences. One where their next dentist helped put a case against the previous for them to pay thousands.

Do you have a hospital nearby with dental emergency department? In your shoes I might want someone else taking a look.

Dry Socket?

Shoot4theMoon · 01/03/2023 05:51

@WombsofWimbledon ohhhh it is just the worst. That’s what I googled but when I looked in the mirror I could see somehting in the hole but I’m no expert but I just don’t think the pain should be getting worse as time goes on

DS had a wisdom tooth out and the hole filled with some infection. Needed an emergency dentist who cleaned the hole and gave antibiotics which fixed it. Good luck.

@euff yes I live near a dental hospital but going there as an emergency you are seen by students and they have cubicles but the walls don’t go all the way to the window and professionals walk up and down checking but it’s a bit scary but as you say iv seen the same dentist both times and both times it’s kinda went wrong so perhaps I should see someone else and yes ordinary pain killers are not helping with the pain

Go to the dental hospital. They are very well supervised and will take their time.

Those students and younger dentists may pick up more and have lots of checking. They won't be diagnosing and letting you go by themselves. My mum worked in one as a nurse and asked me to go there after an issue with a dentist. It was the right thing to do. I've since moved and have a good dentist now. Ddad has just had a biopsy of his cheek and tongue based on the referral made by what he called a very young new dentist that he thought was probably being very cautious.

I hope you get it sorted soon.

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 01/03/2023 13:52

Unfortunately not, it was a couple of days after antibiotics though. He managed it with lots of painkillers in the meantime. Hope you feel better soon.

I’m home everyone they got me straight in. Dry socket they said. Cleaned it out, then packed it with done awful tasting what ever it is. She asked if I wanted numbed but my mouth is soooo sore so I said not if I don’t “need” too. So we went ahead without and I managed. It feels quite a lot better I think

That's good. If you are anything like me you will be relieved that it wasn't you! Hope it's feeling better today.
