Cat Bites

Hi,
We live in France for the last 5 months. Yesterday, my 5 year old son got a bite on his finger from a cat. It was punctured in 3 places. My husband took him to the hospital where it was treated. He was told it was really serious. He received antibiotics and was referred to a special hospital to be treated against a condition known as RAGE. If our son contracted RAGE and was not treated against this, we were told it was certain death within 3 weeks. Imagine our shock. Apparently RAGE is not easily contracted but it is out there. I never heard of it before. Be warned all cat owners. Always get a cat bite treated immediately. If anyone has any information on RAGE I would be glad to hear about it.

I've just seen your other thread, i've just googled RAGE and it's bringing up nothing about cats.

Do you mean rabies? Is Rage the french for rabies?

It is french for rabies

Just read slightly more. In general it seems that France has been considered rabies free but there was a case in the vendee last november which may be why the hospital reacted so strongly.
some more information about the case

The above article does say the risk remains extremely low.
