Hey I really need some help/advice please!! My friends brother has developed schizophrenia and is in a really bad way! Definitely needs to be sectioned or something as he's telling weird story's and making funny noises all night long also talking to people. But when we rang the ambulance they wouldn't help as he didn't consent,🥺 but surely he's not in any fit state to consent to anything. How can we get him the help he needs !! Has anyone gone through this please we are desperate thank you

I'd call 111 they've got a specified bit for mental health.

Call his GP and they can arrange intervention probably from the early intervention team, if this is his first episode. They will decide if he needs to be sectioned for assessment.

SallyWD · 27/02/2023 19:15

I don't understand - people can be sectioned without consenting. I hope he gets the help I need

BillStickersIsInnocent · 27/02/2023 19:15

The not consenting bit is why sections exist!

Funkymonkry1995 · 27/02/2023 19:17

That's what I thought 🤔 but they won't do anything for him . He's taking to him self and telling us that he's in a game and he had super powers and he only has 2 days left . He's also said stuff that suggests he's gonna kill us He told us not to worry about our Jobs as we won't need them soon . It's so hard to hear him like this . We've told all this to the ambulance but they won't do anything 😢

We had some come to the House I think it was to assess him but they just gave him some sleeping tablets 🥺 he's been like this for about 2 weeks now and it's just getting worse

When you say “has developed schizophrenia” what do you mean? Who has diagnosed this if he hasn’t been seen by a psychiatrist?

PermanentTemporary · 27/02/2023 19:23

Take him to A&E. Sorry - I really don't say this a lot on here - but this sounds very risky.

Jodielou5972 · 27/02/2023 19:29

My wife's mum has schizophrenia and it gets really bad sometimes. She's been diagnosed and on meds since around 14-15. But sometimes the voices in her head tell her to stop taking her meds, then all hell breaks loose. She has attacked all of us at some time, she has cut open her settee, flung herself down the stairs, refused to eat because she believes it's all been poisoned, the list is endless. She stands screaming at her hallucinations it's very unsettling. Still, every time we ring the doctors or crisis or 111, they say the same thing, she is a grown woman and they can't do anything without her consent. Unless she is in danger of hurting herself or others. Even then, they need proof. As a family it's really hard and frustrating, but I kind of get it. I mean anyone can ring up and lie in order to get someone sectioned or on meds. They're trying to protect the mentally ill in every way, from themselves but also from others.
If he is currently a danger to himself, ring crisis and they will come and do an assessment immediately.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 27/02/2023 19:34

Surely he is under the community mental health team if he has just been diagnosed with schizophrenia?

Call them and speak to the crisis team.

Funkymonkry1995 · 27/02/2023 19:36

He's not diagnosed. But he's showing symptoms of it . He's hearing voices and thinks he's in a game he's the only one that's made to day 5 without dying and he only has 2 more days left .

Funkymonkry1995 · 27/02/2023 19:39

Ah really sorry that's happened to you . It's definitely upsetting when they won't get help 😢 I think it's really difficult because this is the first time this has happened to him .and he's not diagnosed with it . I thought that If you are mentally ill you can't consent anyway as your to ill . But guess I was wrong

Google your local Early Intervention in Psychosis team and call them for advice tomorrow morning. If you haven't contacted his GP then do and list it as emergency

Winter2020 · 27/02/2023 19:44

Hi OP

I'm not trying to be pedantic in saying that a psychotic episode doesn't necessarily mean a person has schizophrenia. Unless he already has a diagnosis? There can be other causes of a psychotic episode.

This is very frightening/distressing for you and this man's family (and for him of course). I think the thing with getting sectioned is the threshold (I think) is significant danger of harm to self or others - so having a pychotic episode in itself isn't a cause for section but if you think the two day countdown is a threat to himself or others this is what you need to try to convey.

I think you have been given good advice above. Try to engage help services. Hope you are able to find help soon.

Funkymonkry1995 · 27/02/2023 19:50

Hey yeah I understand that but this has been going on for 2 weeks now and now he's got to this really bad stage we've noticed some signs that we missed in the months coming up to this 🥺 . Way way back he was saying he thought Someone was hacking him as he keep hearing a beep in his headset and we thought nothing of it and he also thought his family was plotting against him. But obviously at the time we didn't know these where signs . We are going to ring the 111 mental health and like you said say about the 2 days thing as it really is worrying as we don't know what the voices are saying to him or what happens after the 2 days . Thank you for all the help

schizophrenia is only one possible diagnosis, not something you should be banding about without diagnosis.
The best way to help is to persuade him to seek help. Explain being ill in this way is no different to being physically ill and there are doctors expert in this area who will help him.
Concentrate on there being help available if he asks, help to sleep, help to calm down etc which will help him feel better. No matter what you do don’t tell him you think he has schizophrenia.

^ THIS. Phone the GP first thing in the morning and tell them it’s a psychiatric emergency and he needs an urgent assessment.

Funkymonkry1995 · 04/03/2023 15:27

We called 111 but they didn't take him even though he had a knife in this room and we said we was scared for our safety 😔 really don't know what to do next . He's getting some help from the GP but they are putting it down to lack of sleep it don't make sense. As soon as he speaks to the doctors or paramedics he acts normal. We've even shown them the videos but nothing 😔

rainbpwcupboards · 04/03/2023 17:02

Did you call the local Early intervention team? They have an obligation to assess within 2 weeks of a suspected first psychosis. They might not take a referral from you but might tell you how to get one.

shattered25 · 04/03/2023 17:08

Whereabouts are you? We have a crisis line called first response. They triage calls for A&E visits, home visits and getting a mental health act assesment done which will be how they section him :) people can call for others behalf. But 111 should be able to direct you to what it's called in your area.

shattered25 · 04/03/2023 17:09

Also you can call police on him and ask for a welfare check. If they have concerns they can take him to POS (place of safety) they also do MHA assessments there :)

bluejelly · 04/03/2023 17:12

Definitely call the local crisis team. They can advise. So sorry this must be very stressful for you all Flowers

Funkymonkry1995 · 04/03/2023 17:41

He hasn't been diagnosed so I don't think we can do that . We have called 111 three times within these 2 weeks and they haven't taken him in. Just given him sleeping tables they haven't helped him much tbh he's still the same

OP posts:
rainbpwcupboards · 05/03/2023 11:36

You can contact any of the services without a diagnosis. It's their job to direct you to someone who will diagnose
