Chicken pox / shingles

Hi. DGS 5 diagnosed tonight with chicken pox. DM 83 has surgery for metastatic cancer in 3 weeks. She's currently having immunotherapy. Put a call into her GP but haven't heard back yet whether I can still see her given I saw DGS today and her immune system will be lowered. Looking for advice please whether an adult can catch shingles from chicken pox if they had chicken pox as a child. Many thanks.

You don't "catch" Shingles. Shingles is a reactivation of the virus that causes chicken pox within an individual. A person who has not had chicken pox CAN catch Chickenpox from someone with active Shingles.

However, it is possible to catch chicken pox twice (or more than twice) and as your DM will be immunocompromised i exercise caution around letting your child near until the spots have scabbed over.
