Ok so my tooth has been sensitive to hot and cold for a few weeks this morning it just was hurting for no reason it woke me up so I rang the dentist and got seen within a couple of hours and I said ok so it’s like inbetween these two teeth so she done an X-ray and seen some decay in one of the teeth but said I flinched when she tapped the other tooth so was confused so said never the less she will do a temporary filling and see if this fixed my issue, either it will and then I can go back in a few weeks and get the filling done again permanently or it won’t fix my issue and I’ll need to go straight back….. so this was at like 12pm it’s now 4pm my numbness is almost fully worn off and I felt pain coming on so I tried to take pain killers and I took them with squash and as the squash touched my tooth ohhhhh my I was in agony!!! That pain is still there but has calmed down my pain killers haven’t kicked in yet but I’m in pain and I feel maybe I shouldn’t be in any pain ? Is this normal? Do I need to call straight back? Do temporary fillings feel sensitive to cold and hurt like this?

That sounds horrible. I think I would try ringing the dentist back if I were you, soon as possible.

Littlemissprosecco · 22/02/2023 16:15

It’s the other one!

Ok so I called the dentist back they closed early and said if you need an out of hours dentist to call nhs 111, in which I did to be told they are short of dentists and I won’t be seen unless I tick all the boxes, two of those boxes needed to be ticked were a high temp and sever swelling it worsening swelling, so I was told I could not be seen this was 6pm and to call my dentist first thing in the morning, it’s now 4:30am I’m in agony and I’m waiting for more pain killers to kick in mainly the naproxen which I had lying around and some codeine and then I took paracetamol also last night, after all that failed I sat with a hot water bottle against my cheek. The pain was in my lower teeth, my jaw, my cheek bone and in my ear it was very sever I hadn’t eaten all day my mum kindly made me some home made soup she’s a good egg like that so I went over to hers and managed some soup while she minded my baby for a while. I am scared I’ll call the dentist in the morning and get seen and them say we will redo the filling and then it be the wrong tooth still or even worse I’ll just loose it when I get there and say take it out and it be the wrong tooth!! There are two so close together and the decay was on the inside of one so like touching the surface of the other tooth and the pain appears to be in the middle of the teeth so I don’t know exactly which tooth it is and the dentist wasn’t 100% sure either she assumed it was the decay one but the pain is worse now than it’s ever been so I don’t know why that would be

I’ve had big fillings before where the drilling has bruised my mouth and the pain continued for many days until the swelling went down.

was it definitely a dentist that did it or a hygienist. Basic fillings are increasingly done by dental hygienist and I guess it’s like seeing a nurse at the GP rather than a doctor! But the same knowledge of less common problems isn’t there.

hopefully you get it sorted today, maybe ask for a second opinion. Toothpain is one of the worst isn’t it? 💐

Sorry to hear this. Feeling a little unwell myself so can't read the whole post but you can get something called orajel that you apply to the tooth which helps numb pain. Morrison's/Sainsbury's have it, or there is a higher strength one at some Boots.

Shoot4theMoon · 23/02/2023 12:41

@TerfIngOnTheBeach I think a dentist as she had a helper and she seamed fairly bossy so I assumed she was high up and I was also an emergency appointment. It’s 12:40pm and my pain killers I had at 8:30am have worn off. My ear is sore iv got cotton wool in my ear and my tooth feels like a raw nerve sat in my mouth I wish they could have seen me and numbed it so at least I got a pain free day while waiting for my app

Seriously, get the orajel if you can. It numbs it.

FixundFoxi · 23/02/2023 13:18

Try Clove oil. I found it worked whilst waiting to take painkillers.

tulips27 · 23/02/2023 14:23

Orajel and clove oil have a very similar effect but orajel doesn't have that unpleasant taste.

Torvean · 23/02/2023 19:59

Agree on orajel you can get it in supermarkets and chemists.
