Bleeding after sex

Sorry if TMI but I’m worried and have been all day.

I am 47, what I believe to be peri menopausal and have some symptoms regularly associated with this: insomnia, sometimes irregular periods, headaches etc

Backstory: when I was 21 I had to have an operation and had part of my cervix taken away due to cancerous cells. It was quite serious. This resulted because I visited my GP as I was bleeding after sex. Every time.

Fast forward to now ( been with my husband 20 years) and have never once bled after sex, but did this morning.

We haven’t had sex for a month or so because he’s been away so I wondered whether it was that. Too rough etc? But it was nothing unusual and the sexual positions weren’t any different or anything like that.
I also thought immediately it had triggered the start of my period as there was quite a bit of blood. Popped a tampon in after showering etc and yet no blood at all for the rest of the day.
My smear tests are up to date . I don’t smoke. I already have the most awful anxiety so this is through the roof.

Please can I have a handhold? Any ideas what this could be? I know I will need to go to the doctor and guess I am really scared hence my post. It’s almost like history repeating itself and I am scared to have sex for the moment in case it happens again.

😓

Could it be the peri menopause? Rather than something sinister?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I'm similar age, and been on hrt since Xmas. I bleed after sex and have done for last few years. Seen gynaecologist and had minor procedures but still no reason, its never bucket loads and the colour changes. Got another appointment coming up actually. At one point they thought it was my coil so had that out 8 nonths ago and still happening. If you go doctors you will be referred under the 2 week rule, and then if something you can make a plan, but i believe its not uncommon for ladies at a certain age to experience, try not to worry.

Ohdearnotagain76 · 20/02/2023 06:27

Possible linked to menopause as I believe that's when mine started. But you need to go doctors

YukoandHiro · 20/02/2023 06:28

Could definitely be perimenopause related as the vaginal tissue thins - but definitely go and get checked out for other things first

Thank you for your replies .

I spoke with my Doctor today about something else but like an absolute idiot bottled it and never said anything about this 🙄

Scared in all honesty and I couldn’t face telling her.
How utterly ridiculous. I have two children and need to get a grip.

Not sure what to do now. Wait until I have sex again and hope it’s all good? Could it be a one off? I have had very light period type cramps for the past week or so very randomly but no blood.

Feel like a right twat. I really do.

Please make another appointment and go back. It could be a number of things but you do need to get checked. Maybe you could ask if there is a Menopause specialist at the GPS and ask to see them?

urrrgh46 · 20/02/2023 22:11

i think you're getting your self whipped up here! This is not on going bleeding after sex. It's happened once. Given you think you're in peri i would suspect things are a bit dryer down there and the sex was a bit vigorous and you've got an abrasion most likely. i'm not telling you not to talk it through with your GP but i think it's highly unlikely they'll start doing lots of investigations for one episode of bleeding. Keep an eye on it. If it happens again etc and speak to your GP as you are clearly co concerned but given your smears are up to date etc it's highly unlikely to be something sinister.

GladAllOver · 20/02/2023 22:21

I don't think you need to worry too much after just one incident. Do have sex again, use plenty of lubrication and try to enjoy it.

Eranzer · 20/02/2023 22:27

Possibly cervical ectropion, would make sense with you being peri (it's commonly caused by a change of hormones and is harmless). Definitely speak to GP if it happens again.

mumyes · 20/02/2023 22:28

OP, please see your GP.
It may be nothing, but please just get it checked. Don't wait.

Look up vaginal atrophy. See your GP again. Get some Ovestin or Vagifem.

JammiDodgers · 21/02/2023 14:40

Thank you all . The weird thing is ( sorry if TMI ) I wasn’t dry.

I am really stressed about this . And know I need to see my doctor. Just really worried .

@JammiDodgers were your cells previously pre cancerous or actually cancerous?
Did you have the LLETZ Procedure ?
I only ask as I had it in my 20s too and it seems very common and unlikely to cause issues in later life.

I’m not really sure to be honest. That’s completely shit on my behalf but part of being the air head 20 something I was ( and to a certain extent , still am).

I have actually had a few bad smear tests over the years and the last one wasn’t great but I had a follow up and all was okay. Hence why I said all smear tests up to date. And okay .

3 years ago I had some bleeding after sex and I was extremely worried. I saw my doctor who did an examination and he said it was ectropion that had caused it. The doctor mentioned the perimenopause can also be a cause.
