Norovirus without vomiting

Is it possible to get norovirus without vomiting and only have diarrhoea? I've been visiting my daughter in hospital and her ward had norovirus on it. Her dad has got the full sickness and diarrhoea but I've only had diarrhoea so far.

How likely is the sickness to follow or would I have already been sick by now if I was going to be?

Asking because I really panic about being sick.

I feel the same way about sickness, don't worry!
I would honestly stay calm if at all possible; maybe ask dad whether the diarrhoea or vomiting started first, as that may help to prepare you a bit either way. Obviously it's possible to have very different symptoms, but my assumption (which helps a lot with the panic 😂) is that the virus might cause vomiting first and diarrhoea later as it takes it's time to work its way through your system.

No one can promise you won't be sick, but if you are just remember that it should only last 1-2 days, and if that time you'll probably spend less than 60 seconds being physically sick. You will feel rotten but it will pass, get some audiobooks or binge watch a new series and it will be over before you know it.

Also I hope your daughter feels a lot better very soon Flowers

Yes definitely. I've had it twice where the kids and my oh have had it all and I've just had diarrhea.

Yes, we all had it years ago without sickness

greenacrylicpaint · 17/02/2023 06:13

it's possible.
shen we all had it 3 of us went both ways, 1 had squits only and 1 had awful smelling breath.

I have emetaphobia and we’ve had norovirus ( confirmed) in the house once and possibly more as the kids have had sickness and diarrhoea at least 6 times last year. Each time I’ve only had diarrhoea so yes it’s possible. Not sure if it’s anything to do with my phobia that I sort of repress it.

I have never vomited with any kind of stomach bug. Only from food (and alcohol) poisoning.

Thank you everyone. Do you think that I would have been sick by now though usually? I feel a bit queasy but not to the point where I want to be sick.

Feel so weak and just want to lay down. Might take my duvet to the toilet with me and sleep there 😂

I think us emetophobes are just really, really good at not being sick!

Plingston · 17/02/2023 06:44

Definitely. I find it quite hard to be sick - i think I might have something wrong with the opening of my stomach because I don't burp either. I'm almost never sick with norovirus, even if I feel very nauseous. I just get diarrhoea. I seem to feel ill for longer than the rest of my family and I always think it's because I don't vomit and it has to work its way through me for longer. I've never known diarrhoea to start before vomiting but I'm not an expert.

I often have stomach bugs with just diarrhoea and no vomiting but I am also an emetophope so can stop myself being sick even when I feel very nauseous.
The last bug I had started with diarrhoea and the extreme nausea came later in the day (I stopped myself being sick) but I have had bugs with just diarrhoea and no nausea.
