Tooth abscess

Has anyone had one of these? Should it still be THIS sore after going to the dentist twice? The second time, I refused to leave until something was done and had root canal drilled.
Am now like a hamster but in agony though the pain comes and goes.
Can anyone recommend pain relief that will see me through until I see dentist again on the 13th?

did the dentist allow it to drain before he root filled it? There could still be infection down there. Get some anti-b's from the doc now (metronadizole deals with anarobic bacteria) as its sounds like theirs still infection under the tooth.
I have had (and still have) abcesses. Nasty things.

karen999 · 08/02/2008 14:20

The 13th is quite far away! I had something similar and I took Paramol (it has codeine in it) and is quite strong. Sounds like you may have an infection which is why you are still in pain.

Can you not get a sooner appt?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 08/02/2008 14:25

Any chance of getting antibiotics to clear the infection?

My dentist prefers to prescribe antibiotics before doing any work, although years ago I had a mighty abcess and he cut it with a scalpel SLASH SLASH SLASH just like a zorro mark

eeeeeeee

southeastastra · 08/02/2008 14:27

poor you i'm still recovering from mine.

i found ibuprofen with codeine along with paracetamol the best to take. but you should get some anti-biocs too. i'm on second lot

JeremyVile · 08/02/2008 14:30

Hmm, nice name.

Get the toothe pulled. Root canal doesn't guarantee no more abcesses and clearly this is the case for you.

I suffered for two years before I'd have the tooth out and cant believe I left it so long.

In the meantime, get back to the dentist and ask for pain killers. He should understand how much pain you are in. I cant remember the pain killer I was prescribed, but it was very strong.

jeremyspants · 08/02/2008 15:48

I am now starting to feel unusual. I don't know if the dentist properly drained the area but he poked a little rasp sort of thing in, then stuffed a small metal rod and capped it with a temporary filling.
He told me antibiotics would not work as the tooth had died and had no blood supply to it.
I almost pulled the tooth out myself last night. The pain is unbelievable.
I'm taking Paramol and Ibuprofen but they are not working any more.

thats tosh. The abcess will be under the tooth where the root tip is embedded in the jawbone. Thats why it hurts. The pus is building up but it can't drain through bone and the bone has no 'give' in it. Pain is from the pressure.
If he drilled down the root canal and left it open the pus could drain out through the tooth.
Anti-b's can work as the jaw bone has a blood supply but you need one that will kill anaerobic bacteria.

southeastastra · 08/02/2008 15:54

agree with needmc please see the dr or dentist now and get some anti-biocs you will be in more pain without them and it's the weekend.

noddyholder · 08/02/2008 15:54

you need metronidazole as it works in confined airless spaces.I had one and I ended up in casualty as the pain was unbearable and I was going demented with it.Painkillers in max doses took the edge off it but didn't really help when it really kicked in.thought I was going mad In teh end I ahd the tooth out by another dentist who said he didn't really believe in root canals as they were rarely succesful. After I had spent 320 on it Please go back don't leave it for the weekend

needmorecoffee · 08/02/2008 15:55

noddy, I have to have my tooth out. Its root filled but the abcess has come back. Its a front one. Whats that like then? dentist says I'll have to weara tooth onna denture for 6 months while it all heals before he can bridge it.
ick

southeastastra · 08/02/2008 15:56

rinse mouth with very hot salty water too

noddyholder · 08/02/2008 15:57

that is what happened to me.It was a back-ish one though and the whole thing was so traumatic I left the gap.Just couldn't face anymore of it

jeremyspants · 08/02/2008 16:12

Just got an emergency appointment- I don't care if he removes my tooth, just want him to stop the pain.
Back soon waves at everyone

southeastastra · 08/02/2008 16:18

good luck, you really don't want this over the weekend, i did and couldn't get to an emergency dentist.

i've got Erythromycin for my abscess hope that works on anaerobic bacteria.

ComeOVeneer · 08/02/2008 16:19

Metranidazole is more generally pescribed for infections relating to the gums and oral tissues, and infected wisdom teeth rather than standard abceeses. I am surprised he did the root canal treament in one appt. The general treatment is to open and clean canals, dress with an antibiotic paste if required then place temp filling. 1-2 weeks later, if the tooth is asymptomatic, the canal is sealed and a permanent filling placed. It is asking for trouble to seal tooth straight away, as if it hasn't settled it is a bu**er to gain access to canals again.

Oh God. Dentist redrilled tooth and poked needles in then recapped it. I have been given Amoxycillin. The pain is now WORSE than when I went. I am taking 2 Paramol and going to find a corner to weep in.
The infection is under the tooth and pushing it up. I cant think.

OP posts:
JeremyVile · 08/02/2008 17:38

Oh god, have it pulled - honestly, it's admirable that the dentist wants to save the tooth but, is it worth it?
Get rid of it, no more abcess.

ComeOVeneer · 08/02/2008 17:40
  1. Hot salt water rinses around affected area 3 to 4 times a day (teaspoon of salt dissolved in boiling water have it hot but don't scald yourself)
  1. Alternate plain paracetamol with plain ibuprofen spaced out every 2 hours (6pm paracetamol, 8pm ibuprofen, 10pm paracetamol etc). This will allow a higher level of pain relief in your blood stream.
  1. DONOT hold aspirin in your mouth next to the tooth. This may give relief but will cause a chemical burn on your gum which is really painful.

It sounds as though he refiled the canals to remove debris, and inserted a needle (I assume attached to a small syringe) to try and flush out the pus etc.

I'm afraid sometimes there isn't instant relief and you need to wait 24-48 hours until the antibiotics kick in and reduce the infection hence reduce the pressure (and therefore the pain). Not much comfort I know, but I wish you a speedy recovery.

southeastastra · 08/02/2008 19:09

i had to wait a day for the abs to work before they could pull my tooth, i have to say it is the worse pain imaginable. hope you're ok jeremy

jeremyspants · 08/02/2008 19:17

The painkillers/ibuprofen have kicked in and I am now mildly flying. I have also tied a frozen something to my face (I think it is a bag of mushed strawberries) with a scarf. I no longer care how daft it looks as it is working.
Thank you all so much for all your helpful advice and for caring xx feel the love emoticon

hi there actually sat on bed with ice pack to my mouth. How long before anti b work? Seriously feeling sick after too many pain killers. Wanna cry!

avenanap · 09/02/2008 00:30

My dentist wants to pull one of mine. It's not my fault his fingers are so fat he couldn't do the root canal properly. It's starting to throb now. I have an appointment for tuesday but the kid's on half term so I'll have to take him with me. At least it's one at the back
