Coming off amitriptyline

Hello
Has anyone come off amitriptyline successfully? I've been on 50mg for a couple of years, for nerve pain and menopause sleep issues.

I want to come off as I don't sleep that great on it anyway, it gives me sugar cravings and if I take too close to eating my dinner, gives be a bit of constipation and a very dry mouth.

When I've not taken it, I don't sleep at all, I mean no sleep, just wide awake all night. So, it looks like I need to taper off slowly? Tonight I plan to take 25mg, or should I get my pill cutter and try to chop off 10mg and do it that way?

Any thoughts?
Thanks

I.had them.a few years sho but I had to stop, because they didn't suit me. The doctor gave me advice on.howvto reduce the dosage. Get in touch with them. I think it is something you are supposed to do gradually. Good luck.

I think you should definitely taper very slowly and take medical advice...

Thanks both.
I will certainly taper off slowly, starting tonight.

Kind of wishing I had never started taking this drug now.

@Runaround50 how are you getting on? I SLOWLY reduced from 70mg over a 10/12 week period or so - if I went too fast I had side effects of leg and arm cramps. Just this week completely off it and sleep hasn’t been impacted really. Hope you managing ok !

@Toomuchtoolong I'm still on between 37 and 50 mg nightly. I can't sleep otherwise ( it seems!)

I'm happy to take it for now, as it's not causing me too much bother ( other than a dry mouth).

Do you feel okay now you are off the amitriptyline?

@Runaround50 I spoke too soon about the sleep- took ages to sleep last night and was awake several times in the night which is a first in months!
this is only day 30 of zero so will have to see how I go. I would take some again if necessary without hesitation. The nerve pain has mostly subsided even now I’m off it so hopefully that means the discs have healed somewhat . I was worried the amitriptyline was just hiding the pain but hopefully away for good!

Runaround50 · 27/03/2023 16:32

@Toomuchtoolong ah give it time, I'm sure things will settle down.

My nerve pain is alive and well and I've got disc damage too. Not sure where to go from here really as I feel sure I need surgery of some kind!

Good luck going forward 🤞
