Tooth extraction - please help

I had a tooth extracted on Monday as it had an abscess. It's healing okay, and I'm on antibiotics as the infection was bad but the hard abscess lump on the gum hasn't gone down at all.

The dentist said it should go down once the tooth was out. Has anyone had an extraction after getting an abscess and how quickly did the lump go for you?

Are you on antibiotics?

Those lumps take a while to go. Have you noticed that the tooth was a bit spongey in its gum (as it's sitting on infection as that should start to go first

I’m afraid I needed another course of antibiotics to finally get rid of abscess. Wait until you’ve nearly finished antibiotics, if no better see dentist to maybe get more.

I had loads of antibiotics and the lump drained and it still took years to totally disappear. Once the initial trauma from the dental work has calmed down, as it's not painful or swollen anymore then the abscess itself has gone.

@Icanbetherubberband yes I am, am on day 4 of amoxicillin (augmentin) with no change

@custardbear @Mindymomo @YukoandHiro that's very helpful to know! I wasn't sure if it should be quite instant and the lump should disappear or could take a while. I'll see how I am next week and visit the dentist if not. Thank you again!

They'll likely put you on metronidazole if amoxicillin isn't working. My third set of antibiotics for a flare up in the same place I was on both lol 😆
See if you can get them to prescribe you some heavy cocodamol too if possible as the pain isn't pleasant!

I had my tooth extracted yesterday, I had a huge abscess on the tooth and bad infection. They took my tooth out and I was given no antibiotics. I am taking paracetamol and don’t have any pain. I have a white substance on the extraction site. I’ve still got an abscess lump but it’s not as bad as it was before the tooth extraction. I’m hoping it will go down eventually but I’m wondering whether I will need antibiotics to speed up the healing process… I got it done by the nhs emergency dentist as currently don’t have a dentist
