Probs with Microgynon Pill

I have just started taking microgynon again but am having a few probs.

Basically i can tell that after usually two days of being back on it i am a right moody cow and feel really grumpy and down, turn into the mother and partner from hell.

I have never ever had thsi prob with it before. I originally started taking it after having Dd1 in 1997 and have been on and off it since then, having 2 more kids in between.

I feel so bad that i have stopped taking it again but am not sure what oyher contracepotive to try.

I think that it is unlikely these mood swings could be down to taking the pills for only 2 days. HOwever, Microgynon is not th eonly brand of combined contraceptive pill and it really doesn't suit everyone (thus the reason why there are so many different types to try). I would advise you to continue taking these pills for the next 3 months, then if you feel you are still experiencing side effects, go back to your clinic and change to a different brand. USually you need to give a pill 3 months to settle in before deciding that it doesn't work for you. HOwever, if you've had problems before with Micrigynon before and just don't like taking this one, then go back sooner and ask to try a different sort ASAP. HTH

CC - I used to take microgynon. I went back on it after having ds1, but never felt 'right'. Its difficult to explain as there was nothing specific but I jus never felt normal IYKWIM. GP switched me to another (Logynon (?) I think but it was a long time ago. I stuck with that for a while but eventually gave up on the pill altogether as we were planning more babies. Dh had the snip later and it was just the best thing (for me anyway Grin)

ahh right thanks for that, will try and get an appintment with gp this week to discuss it.

BTW I wouldn't feel bad about stopping taking it, but just be aware that you are now at a heightened risk of pregnancy (I know that may be obvious, but you wouldn't believe how many people accidentally get pregnant just after stopping taking the pill) There are lots of other sorts of contraception you could try, such as the implant, contraceptive injection, a mirena coil (with hormone attached) or a normal coil, but it sounds like the pill normally suits you, so I would suggest you try changing brands. However, before all that I would try to stick with Microgynon a bit longer though, just to give it a chance.

I took microgynon when i was at college and went through 6 months where i was quite violent towards my then bf and my mood swings were really bad! I switched to another pill but then decided to have the injection! this had no side effects for me and was great!

jingleballs · 05/12/2004 22:03

I was the opposite bonkers, the injection made me violent, but never had a prob on Microgyon, until TTC #1, I won't be going back on it once we've concieved, I don't know if that was what was taking so long but would rather not risk another long time of TTC.

bonkerz · 05/12/2004 22:05

i had the injection in July 2002 and every 3 months till may 2003 and dh and i are still ttc! so injection has its down side and i wont use it again till ive had all my babies!!!!

ChristmasCracker · 05/12/2004 22:11

I have had the injection before but i felt ill all the time, really tired and sick, kept thinking i was pregnant.

i took femulen - i think that's the right name - but had to stop when i relaised i was pregnant

carolHELSInger · 05/12/2004 22:34

I was also horrendous on it. Dr offered to change it but I decided to have a baby instead!!!

I didn't get on with microgynon either - it made me depressed and spotty. I think it is the standard one GPs prescribe because it's cheap but there are lots of others you can try. I switched to Trinovum which has 3 phases with different amounts of hormones in each and I found this fine - no side effects at all.

hazlinh · 06/12/2004 01:28

yup, socci's right, it's usually the first one your gp will give you, but there are loads of other brands of the combined pill to try.

microgynon didn't suit me either, severe mood swings, cramps in my legs, headaches. switched to CILEST which was MUCH MUCH better.

unfortunately when i moved back to malaysia from the UK, i had to switch to Marvelon cos for some reason they don't sell Cilest here. but Marvelon was almost as good.

am now on the mini pill (Noriday) tho, because am breastfeeding.doesn't seem to be giving me problems.
