Got 4 tablets per day for a chest infection intially for a week . Am finding contradictory info about whether to take before/with/after food. Took first dose at lunchtime and feel a bit bloated now

I have had it loads of times - IIRC I just take the tablet when it's time for it - never thought about the food thing

It can often make you feel very sick, hence the attempts to combine with food to minimise that, I believe. I would say go with whatever makes you less sick.

Have just checked the BNF and it doesn't state when it should be taken re food. However common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal discomfort. sorry

LIZS · 06/02/2008 18:21

aah good , just taken second dose so we'll see. Also took probiotic at lunchtime to try to offset the side effects and have an antacid yet to take but not sure when to fit that in !

i am allergic to it

goingfor3 · 06/02/2008 18:38

I would take it with food as it can really have nasty affects on the stomach.

LIZS · 07/02/2008 08:49

So this morning I have an upset stomach , woke in night with a salty taste in my mouth and was almost sick then was sick this morning. Not sure if it will settle enough for me to go into work .

OP posts:
LIZS · 07/02/2008 09:19

and again , will it settle down ?

OP posts:
cali · 07/02/2008 09:22

Don't know, erythromycin doesn't agree with me. Took it for 2 days and lost over half a stone -dont take it any more!!
hope you feel better soon, might be worthwhile contacting your Gp as there are antibiotics that cover similar bacteria and don't have the same awful side effects.

LIZS · 07/02/2008 15:23

ok sick again after lunch , do I call gp ?

OP posts:
geekgirl · 07/02/2008 15:36

yes, call your GP, there are plenty of alternatives. No need to suffer!

I threw up with these too. I think they also may be the ones that gave me a horrible itchy rash.

fakeblonde · 07/02/2008 23:33

If you feel real nauseous take 1 three times a day for longer.
Dont let your tummy get empty and take them after food or just with milk and a slice of toast.

geekgirl · 08/02/2008 07:51

they do work well for most people, SEA. Dd2 took full strength erythromycin every day for 2 years without any ill effects whatsoever.

southeastastra · 08/02/2008 12:58

i only seem to be getting small stomach aches atm, they don't seem to be doing anything for my infection though. do they take long to work?
