FIT TEST abnormal

Hello, has anyone had an abnormal fit test result (49) and awaiting an urgent 2wk appointment re: possible cancer diagnosis?

I'd been having bowel issues and pain/bloating gor about 8wks in the run up to Xmas, a whole array of bloods came back normal apart from ferritin (whatever that is) and now a precautionary fit test has come back detecting blood in my stool.

I'm 42 and have 2 boys (7 and 20 months).

I'm trying not to Google bowel cancer but it's hard not to think of Deborah James. Just wondered if anyone else had been in this position?

Dr said nxt step could be a scan or colonoscopy. I'm really surprised as my symptoms have disappeared since I started on saxenda for weight loss and I put it down to not eating as much and having smaller meals.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Fit tests detect blood in stool and it can come from a variety of issues - piles, polyps, ibd, and cancer so it’s good that you’re being referred - I think with a pos fit test you automatically get put on the cancer pathway. Did you have a calprotectin test too for inflammation too?
Ferritin is related to iron levels so low ferritin would align with a positive Fit test ie you’re losing blood.
Good luck. I have had bowel issues lately but my Fit test was thankfully neg.

Yes my faecal calprotectin was normal. X

A large % of people with positive FIT tests end up not having cancer.

I had a positive (routine) FIT test after no symptoms (except iron low enough for 3x infusions last year). I was then ref for a Colonoscopy on the 2w pathway (which around my area = 6wks atm). This showed piles & I was discharged. I was told the '99% of positive FIT tests aren't anything to worry about' by the (disinterested) HCP I saw. Good luck, its good you are being checked quickly x

Hi there,

My FIT came back today. My result is 10, normal range is 0 - 9.9 and still been marked as a normal. Have you been referred for a colonoscopy on 2 weeks pathway?

Yes! It’s on the 17th. Have you? Our scores are the same.

im trying not to worry but it’s so hard not to!

About 1 in 10 positive FITs are cancer. A result of 10 is only just on the threshold of abnormal. You're also very young. It's impossible not to worry though. Hope it's all ok Flowers

Thank you so much xx

all my other tests were completely normal. Which is reassuring. And i do feel well within myself. Just odd stomach ache and some clear mucus from behind.

I’ve suffered with haemorrhoids for the last 5 years and have had them banded 3 years ago. So tbh I’m hoping the blood found in the test is just from those.

I’ll sure to report back to update everyone and if anyone ever stumbles across this thread in the future x

No. I have seen my results on Patients Access app marked as a NORMAL! I phoned to my GP practice and receptionist refused to send even msg to the doctor about my results. She said that I need to call on Tuesday and TRY to book an appointment, but they are extremely busy and dont have any routine appointments (checking results is not emergency).

I've seen that anyone with FIT of 10 have been referred on 2ww pathway- except me.. Looks like I have "different 10" than others..

Absolutely chase this up! My
doctor told me if mine was under 10 she’d have considered normal. But because it’s dead on 10 it’s an automatic referral.

she was totally reassuring ect and I have spoken to the consultant at the hospital as well who was the same.

I think even for piece of mind it’s the right thing to do. Especially when myself and others have been referred; it can’t be ignored!

Hello, yes I had both an endoscopy and coloniscopy and both were normal. They took random biopsies which came back showing slight inflammation but said that could have been fown to the bowel prep you have to take before hand. I'm so relieved!!
It's good that they get you checked quickly though. I'm sure you will be fine. Though as a recommendation, if they offer you sedation- take it!!

Fantastic news! :) so pleased for you.

I had a colonoscopy 10 years ago with sedation and cried and screamed through it… I’m absolutely dreading it. And I’ve told the doctor my previous experience so fingers crossed it’s a lot better this time around!

I’ll definitely report back once I’ve had it!
