First period after section and sterilisation

trigger and TMI about period blood.

I have just got my first period since having my twins and it's awful.
They are 14 weeks old and I am mostly breastfeeding with formula top ups for my wee girl.
I was sterilised at the same time as my C-section ( tubal removal) and have had light spotting but this is my first proper period.
It's quite painful in my back and stomach, I was cramping for 2/3 days before hand and it's heavy.
I'm having dark, almost black blood and it's really thick and clotty, almost tar like.
My stomach is really upset too and I'm so tearful.
With my other kids I didn't get periods back until around 9 months post partum.
I'm not sure if it's the twins element, the C-section or the sterilisation or a combo nation of it all that's made it so horrendous.
DH doesn't 'get' how horrendous I feel.
Is this normal or should I be speaking to the GP?
I don't want to waste their time if this is normal after twins/ C-section/ sterilisation.
And after a hand hold because I'm a massive wimp when it comes to shark week.

Im actually wondering whether it's a period or whether it's some kind of retained clot/infection. Breastfeeding twins means it's unlikely (though not impossible) you'd get your period back so soon and if your body has previously delayed the return of periods until 9 months when breastfeeding I'd be inclined to be suspicious. If your periods are usually different in nature (pain, clotting) I'd also be suspicious.

I'd call 111 or your postnatal team (if you're still under their care) and monitor your temperature just in case.

Just to add...

Is there any odour (beyond that which is normal for you)? That's another thing I'd monitor.

Black/dark blood can be normal and it might just be that you're starting your period with a slower flow than usual (causing the colour).

My first period after my emcs was like no other I have ever had. It was the most painful & heavy but not in a normal way. Like you I had heavy clotting to start with, then bleeding like post birth, then more clotting until it eventually died down to old brown blood for about 5 days, it lasted 12 days in total. I spoke to my doctor who told me that unless it happened again it was entirely normal.

I was thinking this as I know breastfeeding delays periods but I'm 3 months post partum?
It's so strange

Thankyou, I'll try and just see how it continues then. Hopefully it will turn a lighter red become less clotted before trailing off.

I was recently sterilised and also had an oophorectomy.

My first period after was like nothing ever before.

EXTREMELY heavy.

The next one was more normal.

If in doubt get checked out
