Bleeding mirena

Holidayyys · 21/01/2023 08:08

I had the mirena fitted around a week ago. And have started experiencing some heavier bleeding and cramps. I know it says you can experience some bleeding/spotting after but I just didn't expect so much its period like. The first day of fitting I had painful cramps then after that it was fine apart from some light spotting for the last 5 or 6 days or so. Then last night lots of blood and now cramps and bloods. Is this normal. How long should I expect all this bleeding to last?

It varies for everyone. I was 7 months post birth when I had mine fitted, hadn't had a period at all as am breastfeeding but the mirena brought it on. Had a period and have had spotting since and its been 10 weeks! So annoying.

The GP said it could be upto 12 weeks of spotting. 😢

Mrsworried1 · 02/02/2023 09:51

Hi how are you getting on? I had mine fitted 10 days ago and I’m having quite a heavy painful “period”. Spotting since about 4 days post fitting. Then over the last 48 hours it’s got heavier.
I got this coil to help spotting and irregular bleeding so I am worried this is not going to help. I was on the pill last year for the same reason and it made me bleed ALOT and I know this is the same hormone and I’m regretting this already despite the gynaecologist insisting it would stop all bleeding and be a miracle cure 🙄 xx

Holidayyys · 02/02/2023 21:50

@Mrsworried1 I know exactly what you mean. I though the spotting was starting to settle down but then this morning I had quite a bit of bleeding, quite period like and I would be due on my period in the next day or two so not sure if its that. If it hasn't started to settle in another month I'm having it out. The irregular spotting and bleeding I had before having it fitted was much more pleasant than this.

Mine has been in 10 weeks and I just stopped bleeding

Mrsworried1 · 04/02/2023 10:00

@Holidayyys Yes I know what you mean, I was only spotting before this and now it’s a full bleed. I’m on day 4 of much heavier bleeding and pain I’m actually really worried- I have had a bad cold and been coughing alot and wonder if I have dislodged it or something? If that’s even possible? I am hoping this doesn’t go on for the 6 months I am meant to “try” it for! I might have to check the strings later (don’t really want to do that when I’m bleeding so much) x

MrsFinkelstein · 04/02/2023 10:07

I've been using the Mirena since 2008, it's very common to get irregular bleeding for the 1st few months, esp the 1st 12 weeks.

I had slightly heavyish bleeding for about 3 months, then lighter spotting for another 3 or so months. I haven't had any bleeding since then, so coming up on period free for 15 years.

Best thing ever IMO, but it's not an immediate fix and if you give it less than 6 months then it's pretty pointless.

KangarooKenny · 04/02/2023 10:08

Are you due a period now ? I had spotting for 6 months, and still had gradually lighter periods in that time.

mydudero · 04/02/2023 10:13

I had mine fitted in May last year and the first 3 weeks were horrendous. The cramps were terrible though they settled after a week, but the bleeding was on par with the 10 weeks after birth at which point they discovered I still had a small bit of placenta left! There was 1 day where I left the house for an hour to do a food shop with a jumbo night pad on, no tampon as they recommended I didn't to start with. By the time I got home I realised I had bled through to my (thankfully dark) denim shorts but I was mortified at the thought of walking around Tesco like that 🙈

I went back to have it checked and they said it was fine and to just try and let it settle. The bleeding lightened then stopped altogether after about 6 weeks and since then I have been having regular but lighter periods with regular cramps for the first day or so. Mine hasn't stopped completely like some women's do, but I'd rather this than sporadic periods that can catch you off guard like the mini pill used to do for me.

All I can say is that ime it's hell at first, but has improved my periods overall and it's my favourite contraception so far. I have used the mini pill, combined pill & the patch for comparison.

Harebrain · 04/02/2023 10:14

I had 4 weeks of heavy bleeding and then it completely stopped. I’ve had nothing for a year now.

Winniethepig · 22/02/2023 07:49

Mine also stopped, 10wks all gone, no periods since

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 22/02/2023 07:59

I had bleeding at first with Mirena, not heavy after the first week or so just annoying, I spoke to my GP and was given norethisterone which stopped it and I then had ten years period free.

My friend was given the mini pill to stop her bleeding

Chocolateteabag · 22/02/2023 09:20

I'm on my second - had 4-5 months of on off bleeding with the first but then pretty much nothing. Definitely worth persevering with in my case and then going through having a second put in

Mrsworried1 · 22/02/2023 09:55

4 weeks in and I’m still bleeding 😭 hope it’s stops. That’s not even the worst part, the cramps that pop up randomly, thought they had stopped but yesterday they were bad enough to take pain killers! X

Mrsworried1 · 06/03/2023 21:29

Anyone still fed up? Lol. 6 weeks for me now and STILL bleeding daily x

Mrsworried1 · 25/04/2023 13:57

So I’ve passed the 3 month mark- still spotting daily! Is anyone else as fed up as me 😭 x

Holidayyys · 25/04/2023 22:24

My bleeding seems to have almost settled. I still get random spotting/bleeding roughly around the time of my period but not much, as in 1 or 2 days of wearing a pantyliner type bleeding . But also still have spotting just randomly some days throughout my cycle, which is rather annoying as this is what i was hoping the mirena would solve.

I’ve passed the 4 month mark now and I’m still spotting daily 🙄 I’ve had enough now, spotted 7 months prior to this due to the mini pill not agreeing with me.
I knew this wouldn’t work for me! Xx

Thinking back now, I had spotting for about 7-8 months initially (after about 5 months it stopped being daily). Was a bit annoying, but I knew it can take up to a year.

I haven't bled since 2009 now, am on my 3rd Mirena.

Winniethepig · 17/05/2023 23:39

Is anyone getting their periods on Mirena? Mine turned up after four months of nothing. Really heavy and I had two weeks of cramping before.

Didn't occur to me it could be Mirena, anyone else experiencing this?

Mrsworried1 · 18/05/2023 10:19

my spotting has been daily but light, until I’ve hit the 4 month mark and It’s got more period like and also cramping terribly! Xx

Holidayyys · 19/05/2023 20:00

I only now seem to spot around what would be my period or ovulation I think so its definetly settled (month 5). TMI - but does anyone else feel quite dry down there since having it fitted particularly during sex

How are things for you now?
Has it all settled down?

WorriedMillie · 08/09/2023 06:34

I had mine inserted in June. I bled for about 8 weeks, mostly spotting, then had a fairly heavy period a couple of lweeks back

While we’re here, has anyone experienced weight gain or spots? The spots could be due to my B12 jabs but not sure what to attribute the weight gain to! It’s not a lot, but I feel uncomfortable, so maybe it’s fluid….

Mrsworried1 · 08/09/2023 08:02

No not yet, it’s been 8 months!
Continuing to think it’s something sinister! X
